Dear Folks,
Pop Pop in the exhaust on deceleration
Have a strange fault - the above. on deceleration.

Have looked at the signal to the fuel cut off valve and yes it pulses on and off with 12V when decelerating. However I wonder of the solenoid valve in the carburettor may be not doing it's job.

(To check this I rigged up two LED's in parallel opposite way round so that whatever the polarity of the signal one LED should illuminate)

The pop pop pop is caused by fuel igniting in the exhaust and is a common problem, especially if the car is running to rich/lean or there are holes in the exhaust. The fuel shut off solonid is doing its job ok turning off then on when decelerating above 2000rpm. The quickest way to see if it is sticking it just to unplug it. If the poping stops (which I doubt) the solenoid must be sticking.

The next things would be to check the mixture ( a quick look at the plugs will probably do) and of course the ignition timing.

Ours used to do it too because it was running too lean (1.6 S series)

Hope this helps, I know of another car with the same problem too! :)

My old 1.6 used to do this too...check out all your exhaust joints..mine was a bodge weld jobbie...and it sounded evil..it's fitting somehow that my current 1.6 has developed the capability...

That said, I DO need new sparkplugs..it idles like a bag of spanners..

Wouldnt worry about this at all, usually indicates a weak mixture.
