I noticed when I tried to release the bonnet that I had to pull quite hard and there wasn't much of a ping. I guess this means the cable has stretched and needs replacing - do I need a Maestro specific part to replace it or just a generic piece of wire attached to the original end fixings.

Had the same problem tried to get a new one from Rover and I'm still waitng, it's a trip to the scrapyard I'm afraid. If you're thinking ahead get two, as I'm always popping the bonnet that's what I did, afaik Montys and Maestros are the same.

More "Ping" can be got easilly.
the bonnet rests on two rubber things ? on on each side , when you shut it?
they have a gash in the top.
Turn these.. anticlockwise i think , there spring loaded , and will open more efficiantly

No. That isn't what they are for.
To get more "ping" you need to adjust the spring tension in the bonnet spring which is located in the centre of the bonnet. By loosening the locknut and turning the centre with a screwdriver (I think) you can adjust the amount of spring the bonnet has.
The two rubber things at the corners of the bonnet are to stop the bonnet vibrating and provide it with a positive stop when you close it and maintain the correct panel gap. The ones on diesel cars are much bigger due to the increased bonnet vibrations present on them and are easily adjustable by simply screwing them in or out by hand. They should not provide spring tension on the bonnet
