Just as I was starting to think A82WHR was just about spot on and that all was right with the world, I noticed a spattering of oil droplets over the top of the bulkhead. The damned cam shaft cover has a nasty split in it and oil was gobbing out with every turn of the engine. I don't know whether I caused or worsened the problem myself when I changed the gasket, but the split is there and it isn't pretty. I have bunged it up with exhaust putty which has stopped the leak for now, but I need a new part. Does anyone have an R Series cam cover they could sell me? Any idea what it will cost new from Rover? Place your bets...

Edit: I have now got the price from Rover (who don't have one but may be able to order one). Who can get closest to the price...? I'll give you a clue - I'm not buying it!

Never seen an R series I don't think, but if the cam cover is steel like on the A series get it welded up and it'll be fine..

If it is alloy then you could get it welded but you'd need someone good.

Money was closest - £105. Utter extortion.

Has anyone ever tried using that Chemical Metal stuff for fixing things like this? Thought I might give it a go.

I've been using chemical metal to fill the gaps in the welded joints left by my temperamental welder - it's pretty good stuff.

Get it welded up, easy if steel more difficult if aluminium.

Hmm, ally? Now you're asking. Still, only one way to find out!

Pretty sure it is aluminium - I'll attack it with a magnet tonight to make sure. I think I will repair it with Chemical Metal and see how it does. The exhaust putty has done a good job so far, but there are traces of seepage starting to appear...
