Hi all,
My Maestrovan has started making a knocking noise from the nearside front wheel when on full lock. I am assuming this is likely to be a cv joint. The question is, how do you check these? How much do they cost? and how easy is the job to do? :worried:

If it is a clicking/clacking noise that only happens when turning then yes it is likely to be a CV joint. If the noise happens when you load the suspension when driving straight or around either bends then it may just be wheel bearings. I has this problem with my van. I had a knocking that I thought was CV joint but it wasn't it was wheel bearings.

Anyway A CV joint should be about £40 exchange. Chances are it is the outer one that has gone. So as long as you can get the hub nut off (they are flipping tight!) then replacement is fairly straightforward. I got it so I could fit one is about 30 mins after a bit of practice.

Hi Dan,

The noise only happens when I have the van on full lock at the end of the street to turn around, or when I'm parking in a tight space requiring lots of lock. On the road and when cornering it's as quiet as a sunderland supporter.
I have been reading the hub nut posts here, and must admit the stories don't fill me with confidence! Not until I get hold of a 10 foot scaffolding pole anyway!!

Hub nuts are either easy or very hard to undo. My van with 200,000 miles on it was easy yet the donor car with 120k on it was nigh on impossible. At least when trying to undo it you won't immobilise the car as you can (and should) undo it with the wheel still on. It sounds like a CV joint to me too. To check try jacking up the wheel and then rotating it (with the car in neutral) and then try turning the wheel when on full lock. If the motion becomes "notchey" or rough when on full oock but fine otherwise then it is almost certainly the CV joint.
