View Full Version : Warning Lamp Failure

Yes I'm annoyed again! Took my cars instruments out today to correct the mileage and keep the records accurate (which as regular followers of the CHO saga will know reads double) prior to the MOT. I haven't a clue what I've done (did have to be a bit rough at times, it's a fiddly job) but now although the hazards and indicators are working fine the warning lamps inside the car for hazards, indicator tell-tales and sidelamps/full beam don't light. Are all these on a common earth? Any ideas welcome as the MOT's on Monday and without indicator tell-tales that's a fail. I'm not planning on spending tomorrow messing about with it either.

looks like your going to be busy tomorrow, again, have you got another dash to try in the car ,and/or put a meter on the wiring to check for a good earth,or use a jumper cable and test with that.

Not touching it tomorrow if I can avoid it. It's not the instruments at fault I don't think, usually the hazard lamp on the steering column switch would glow red with the hazards even with the instruments completely disconnected, but it's not now. No such thing as a simple solution is there.

Might be worth checking the fuses as maybe on got blown somehow. Other than that the common earth sounds plausible. Can't be of more help I'm afraid.

Common earth? Hmmm, that sounds familiar. You might want to check the earth wires behind the fuse and relay panel where they all bunch up. The ones on my van fell apart where they were soldered together and then the windscreen wipers wouldn't work. I just re-soldered the joint.

There's a tiny bulb in the hazard button that sits on top of the steering column cowl. In struggling to remove the instrument pack I'd knocked this and the bulb had worked free. Replacing it put an end to the problem - for some reason indicator and sidelamp/full beam warning lamps won't function if the bulb in the switch blows/falls out.
Phew! I'm leaving the car well alone until Monday now :)
