While I was away this weekend JOE suffered a complete lack of headlights. I managed to get them back by half-switching on full beam but I investigated the problem this afternoon and found that pin 2 on the switch has obviously over-heated sometime in the past and now sits below the other two thus causing a duff connection.

I wonder if this is a common problem.

Furthermore, I wonder why it over-heated in the first place and if the replacement I found in the shed is going to go the same way.

If it is the column mounted switch on the MK1 dask then yes it is a VERY common problem and yes it will happen again in time.

The only real proper solution is to fit a relay in there (as as standard all the headlight current flows through the switch which eventually packs up and melts).

Oh SO familiar. It starts with having to wiggle the switch, and ended in my case with a choice between dashboard lights and no headlights, or sidelights and no dash! The race car now has Hexie's old switch, and Hexie has WBM's!
