February 2002 and my Maestro fails the MOT. After spending 3 months searching for a suitable replacement I gave up and buy something else. Now, I've sold that something else and I'm again looking for another Maestro. You see, after my old Maestro failed its ticket, I kept it in my parents garage. Last week, I gave it away to someone who'd appreciate it as I couldn't face scrapping it. And you know what? The Maestro started and drove away, 27 miles away, after being laid-up for so long. If anybody knows where a good example can be found, please let me know.

When I was given george, he had been standing for 6mnths in a yard. we started him up, took him down for an MOT to see what was wrong with him and make sure he was still fit to be on the road.
He failed on emmisions. Not surprising seeing as he had been standing for 6mnths.
You ever see that news article on the maestro that was driven into the sea and was recovered. It started first time again :)

Where abouts are you Sward? I have a reputation of finding Maestros for people. The best way I've found is to post a Maestro Wanted message on the classifieds here. Simple and successful.
Also try upmystreet.co.uk for the car classifieds and of course loot.com.
I've also found that it can take a while to find the correct non-rusty example :(

Hi!
After I bought my silver Maestro, bought because there was NO rust except on the wheel arches, I noticed that it has been standing for 3 years! But it was fine and needed only a new battery and the water pump gave way after arriving home (120 miles later). After we brought her home, we did change all the fluids for peace of mind...
And now I've had nearly two years of trouble free motoring :-)

PS: There is a very well kept MG EFi for sale, no rust, never welded and less then 50k miles - but it's LHD here in Germany

Thanks for all your advice. I'm a motor trader myself and look at hundreds of cars for sale each week. Occassionally, I came across a Maestro, but they are all worn-out. I think because they have always been cheaper than the competition, they tended to fall into the wrong hands. If I cannot find a Maestro, I'll just settle for a Metro.
With regard to the Maestro-by-the-Sea story, see my other posting on Mat C 's small problem! I cannot believe anyone else remembers that exact story from so long ago.
I live in Washington, Tyne & Wear.

Having just looked at the classifieds, I see that there is a Maestro Advantage up for sale in Huddersfield. What was special about the Maestro Advantage other than the white alloys? Does anyone have a spec sheet for this model? also, does anybody know this car? Is it a member od the Maestro Owners Club?
Currently, I in correspondence with a couple who have a Metro for sale on ebay. Spoilt for choice here.
3 Litre, left hand drive doesn't worry me, getting from Germany to here does!

They're all well hidden in the most unlikely of places.. I found H870 after a recommendation from the Disabled Motorists Federation. A house in Shrewsbury was being cleared, and it was a part in the sale.
I turned up to see the old boy clearing the house and he said "it's in the garage..it's been there a year. You'll have to push the garage off it though..it's collapsed."
I looked in said garage and saw an immaculate white 1600..and bought it on the spot..:)
The old boy was quite overwhelmed that I wanted to buy it..it was his sisters..she only wanted £800..I gave him £1000..it was worth it. The wheelchair lifts cost £600 a peice!! Apparently nobody had shown any interest, and in 3 days more, it was due to be taken and scrapped...
It beats the convertible Cavalier I was looking at...

Maestro Advantage is basically a Maestro 1.6L with a MG Maestro 2.0i exterior.
They are quite basic inside with normal cloth seats, wind-up windows, and no rev-counter. A factory fitted sunroof was standard.
The exterior trim features 15" white lattice alloys - the ones with the 5.5" ones - in fact the same part number as the MG wheels but sprayed diamond white. The three-piece tailgate spoiler, rear wheelarch spats and low front bumper bib are all colour coded like the post 89 MGs.
These cars came in Cherry Red and British Racing Green and I have seen Montego Advantages in Factory Black but not sure about Maestros. The grille is colour-coded but it is an Austin item with a black rectangular badge with Maestro written in silver letters. Advantage logos were on the tailagate and front doors under rubbing strips and the Maestro badge was replaced with white decal that said MAESTRO and this was in a type face taht looks like Times New Roman.
The engine is a 1.6 S-Series that has a single SU carb and produces 86BHP.
I think these cars look fantastic, especially in Cherry Red, and if it's in decent nick I recommend you buy it! They are quite rare, too!

If you only see Maestros that have been traded in and are basically unwanted you will see alot of poor condition cars. However in garages across the country are low-mileage, well cared for cars that have been owned from new by elderly owners.
My advice would be to look in the classified for one of these and pay a bit more for a car with a few months MOT left on it so you can drive it straight away.
I bought my MG1600 in 2001 with only 52,000 miles. It had had one owner, 6 months MOT, it was totally original and the spare wheel had never been used. It even has the little credit card in the Supercover sticker behind the rear-view mirror. Cost? £295
They're rare, but if you look hard enough you'll find one hiding in someone's garage.

Yes the Maestro Advantage was available in black. This model also had the rear anti roll bar too.
