the brittas empire was more kiddy orientated, being early viewing time,so he obviously was limited with that type of show, great entertainment tho' :)

The most important thing about the Brittas Empire, and I'm surprised nobody's picked up on it yet, is that he always drove a Maestro! In fact two of them got trashed in the name of 'comedy' unfortunately :(
Yes I do have all the tapes of every episode.
Why was The Office so popular? I watched a couple of them to see what all the hype was about but couldn't see what was amusing.

I cant believe no-ones mentioned surely the greatest sitcom this countrys produced....
Only Fools and Horses
Brilliant program, I could sit and watch them over and over again. Straying from comedy I could watch anything with David Jason in, A Touch of Frost and Open All Hours are another couple of excellent shows.

I've got a lot of time for David Jason. Anyone remember him in Porridge? Frost is good but Fools & Horses is timeless, as is Monty Python...
Hitch-hikers (and offshoots like 'Dirk Gently') is brilliant, both books and TV. How can such a good writer die so Young (apart from a heart attack at his gym...). Let's have a moment's silence.
Blott on the Landscape (Tom Sharpe) is brilliant, but I made the mistake of reading the book before the series was on TV, which detracted somewhat (aged 14...).
How's about Porterhouse Blue (Tom Sharpe book, David Jason starring on TV again)?
Rita Sue and Bob too... blimey, blast fron the blast, that - Sheffield, wasn't it?
How's about 'Taking over the Asylyum' approx 1993, with Ken Stott driving an Allegro III 1.3? At this point in my life, I thought I was about to suffer the same fate as the main characters...
I'd watch Fawlty Towers and Monty Python all night, but does anyone remember...
'If you see God tell him' (BBC) circa 1994 with Richard Briers and Ade Edmondson?
Everyone will know 'Bottom'...
And of course, for anyone of 'a certain age', The Young Ones'... The Python of the '80s!
And there's more, just give me time...

Yeah, I believe after a few million years thatwas the answer. I don't particularly like that program though.
With regards to The Office, the comedy is not as consistant is it as in The Royle Family, but some parts of it are hilarious. I.e. the Dirty Bertie thing they had on there. I thought that was especially funny as my neighbour has one...

Hitchhikers was fantastic - the radio series was the best incarnation, followed by the books, then the TV series. The film, apparently, is still in the offing. Adams' other books - the two Dirk Gently novels are as good, if not better, than Hitchhikers so if you haven't read them, go and get them!
I thought the Office was consistently brilliant for the entire two series. Did anyone else see Early Doors, the recent Craig Cash sitcom? - clearly devivative of the Royle Family but incredibly good. In my opinion, it was better then The Royle Family.

Phoenix Nights was fantastic (think it is being repeated on C4 in August) as was That Peter Kay Thing and actually just about every thing that Peter Kay has a hand in - the man is a genius and without doubt the best thing ever to come out of Bolton.

Only because it came after - Phoenix Nights was born out of one of the episodes of TPKT which was a fantastic series for the time. Have you seen/heard Peter Kay do stand-up? Brilliant.
Did anyone ever watch Spaced? - that was pure genius as well.

I've watched Peter Kay Live At The Top Of The Tower about 5 times literally! Hilarious. Janice, Barbara and Sandra stuck on the rollercoaster that got stuck, "and if things couldn't get any worse...it started spitting."
Peter Kay played about three or four different characters in Phoenix Nights. The guy in the wheelchair, the bouncer, and the one in the van.
Funny how "Garlic, bread." and "Eight, grand." relate to each although they were from different shows.
P.S: "Den Perry did it!"
MaestroMatt
25th July 2003, 14:35
Top of the Tower is superb. Booked it, packed it, f***ed off. He did use garlic bread in Phoenix as well - when his is trying to persuade everyone to rebuild the club, he says that they can start serving exotic food...
"like garlic bread"
"Garlic...? bread...?"
"Yes gentlemen, I've tasted it, it's the future"
Marvellous.

Brasseye was written and starred in by the great Chris Morris - the same comedy genius that was behind On The Hour (R4), The Day Today (BBC2. I was listening to the Jack Dee show on Paramount while on the forum, last night and he was talking about the infamous joy-riding incident in Blackbird Leys, in Oxford. He asked, "How do you associate joy with driving a Maestro?"

I thought Jack Dee took the mick out of the MG Turbo around the time of its release saying what's the point of a supermarket trolley going so fast?
On the Vauxhall front - I vaguely remember sometime ago Jasper Carrot on TV saying that there'll be taxi drivers racing around in Lotus Carltons (predicted for around about now I think)
