Im gettin trouble with my computer now, absolutly nothing is going right for me this week.

when i go on this site, everythin works fine untill i go onto the forums, when im on the pages with the list of threads on them everything is still as normal. the trouble comes when i go on a thread. pages scroll up and down really slow and jumpy, when i write in the thread the cursur moves one letter space at a time much slower than the speed im typing at, this continues for long after ive finished typing but most anoying is that the actual text doesnt appear untill ive finished typing and the curser has moved one step at a time along each line. im sure anyone who has experienced this will know what im on about, and if any one knows how to stop it id like to hear how.

thanks
andy

Hmm, I know what you are on about, it has happened on mine before now.
All I can suggest is that you have too many programs running...

another thing it could be is popups that have come up without you realising it. you can either drop down into the taskbar or minimize this window to see if there are any behind it. this is something we frequently have trouble with on broadband:rolleyes:

I'm sat here at home, no Forum-related problems... all ok.

If I'm on my computer at work, go on the Forum and try to input a post... often, if I press DELETE while editing said post before sending it, the stuff I'm editing disappears and the page that is visible is 'pre "submit reply"' ie the post to which I wish to add mt own contribution. Pressing the 'forward' key restores what I was editing, but it's a pa*n *n th* *rs*... 99.5% of the time I use the DELETE key, but not being able to use the keyboard 'naturally' is, errm, somewhat frustrating...:banghead:

Anything sinister going on? Paranoid, me? If the world was after you, you'd be paranoid, but it wouldn't be anyone of any importance...

its really anoying me cos it takes me ages to write what i want to say, the wierd thing is that it behaves as normal on any page you go on unless its one that you need to write something on like im trying to write this now. i wouldnt put it past a pop up to be behind this by some means.

Pop ups realy get on my nerves because my PC is slow enough already without them coming up and slowing it down even more. ( the worst thing is if your looking at your keyboard and are typing and then u look up and none of its been typed because a popup is your top window)

I know what u mean... whether driving or typing, I like to see where I'm going, but...

At work the computers are slow enough for us to select one program and a print then when the 'prints reqd' screen comes up I don't select '1' but 'join at 7' or similar 'cos it takes sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long for 'prints reqd' to appear... no such problems here at Maison Rich though! No printer for starters...

Add your own syntax, but you know what I mean...

First of all check out the settings for oyur keyboard in the control panel, make sure the repeat delay and repeat rate settings are set to short and fast.. if those are ok, youre problem is memory related. Chuck some more RAM in boyo! :)

I've had no probs with this version of the forum..but the old one at work..? Pain in the bum. More than likely a combination of WinNT4 Workstation and our sillyarse "NASA Written" firewall...:banghead:

Ah well..When I go back, it's WinXP Pro, and a fresh install of said firewall..for now..:)

With regards to RAM, the missus is using my main system, so I'm on a 96Mb XP Pro Compaq Deskpro..and it's fine...

Technology..dontcha just LOVE it?

Rather more serious things afoot... my pc at home appears to have topped itself. It prompts Enter the Command Interpreter you wish to use (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM) and gives a C: prompt. . Any ideas? On using SETUP on the A:\ the screen flags up Error reading data on drive C so I presume it's something fairly terminal as it does this even when the Windows98 CD-ROM is in the D:\.

No idea how I got through last weekend - not only is my pc up the swannee, but the NTL box time-locked itself as well...

Oh, the pc here at work has just done the old 'delete key trick' as referred to above, again... plenty of memory (961MB used from 3.5GB available) though...

While we're on the subject of computers, can anyone tell me how the hell you are supposed to insert scanned images onto these postings?!

It's a good job I know more about vans than computers!

Click on "post reply", click on "attach file", browse for your pic (maximum size 500 pixels wide!), and attach it to the post.

If you're having trouble resizing, I highly recommend a free graphics program called IrfanView - go here www.irfanview.com to download.

e692wtt-if you can boot the PC from a combination of the A: drive and the CD, try doing a chkdsk.."data error drive x:" isn't too good..

My main XP box is dropping unsubtle hints about one of my drives heading for the bookend role..it insists on scanning it at every boot. I'm just glad I have 3 machines in this network I can shift my stuff onto..

Still..holidays..what better time to reformat..

There *is* always that answer of course...;)

I've been going through my workshop and by my reckoning I have about 5 serviceable P2 class systems in bits I could use..plus the 4 running now.

That said, this Compaq Deskpro p2/400 isn't too shabby, and cost £40..bonus..:D

At least you didn't get MS BLASTER virus like I did at the beginning of the week. What a pain that was! Clean now though.

Pc at home still not fixed (but the cats are ok... ).

I think a new one is on the cards, once the move is finished. I had trouble with fitting a PCI Ethernet card to the old pc (ground to a halt at random, plug'n'play sulked etc), so just kept using freeserve with the associated phone bills (although am wired for ntl broadband). Out with the old and in with the new - house, life, why not pc? Monty's staying though!

Dell seem to have some good deals, but I don't like using the black ones at work - they lurk threateningly and sullenly... looking smug.

Dont buy Dell, or any computers with a Brand Name, because thats just what you are paying extra for the Brand Name not the superior quality of the components.

If you are looking for a new computer, it is best to specify parts and build it yourself. If you are not confident in putting the parts together, you can get the small independent computer shop to do it for you, it normally costs an extra £30 which is neither here are there when buying a computer. This method is by far the cheapest and you get exactly what you want.

If you would like any advice on building/buying a computer feel free to ask :)

Ditto to Skatiechik - build your own! It's a lot of fun (usually!), and you get a better spec for your money. I've never bought a branded machine since I learnt how to put one together.

I agree with Maria and Skatiechick. If you do want a pre-assembled one, though, I would go to Evesham Micros who make each computer as it is ordered and who use much better components than the big names like Dell and Tiny. They offer a free 2 year onsite warranty with every PC which is surely a sign of their own confidence in their machines. They always seem to do very well in PC magazine tests as well.

Fair comment. My best mate builds computers, it's just a case of getting the components together and as previously indicated the 'figures' bore me senseless (98 trillion megahertz blah blah and 52meg sheep (or is it ram?) so I'm flying blind... yawn, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

I've no real intention of spending several hundred quid on anything at all, so I'll get a new C:\ and fit it to the existing board, with a new PCI card (see how much I know?). Bores me, it really, really does, but I need a pc - I'll leave it to my mate.
