My Monty DLX been off the road for a month whist I tracked down a recon starter motor. I have one now.
However I lost the one and only key I had. So today I took my V5 too Rover and they cut me a new key from the vin. However, the new key, whilst it opens the doors (bit stiff tho) it does not like the ignition barrel lock. I''ve had her started twice today after playing with key in lock for 10minute sessions.
Has anyone got a spare ignition lock and key that work.. whats involved in swapping them over?
Also need a drivers side black door handle one is snapped and today I noticed the brake fluid light was on, so I guess I suspect a wheel cylinder.. If it is a wheel cylinder, I've seen plenty go through ebay cheap how do I know which one is correct for my 94 DLX and what pads?
Cheers,
Graham

just with regards to the key, once the cars running, take it to rover and tell them the key's not good enough, and that you want it cut again. the second one may well be a better fit? worth a try?

Yeah I can't say about the other things either, but I agree with Andy. It's reassuring knowing that all you have to do is go to Rover with your V5 and they can give you key(s) to fit your doors and ignition, even if it takes them a couple of tries. If you put a new barrel on the car and then loose the key again, unless you've got the V5 for the donor car you're stuffed!

Hi,
I have noticed when getting a key cut for my fionce for the monty that the ignition lock is a lot more difficult to match than the doors even with a correct master key, a bit of fileing was all that was needed, I have an ignition someware if you end up needing it but agree with the others, if you have paid rover for a key that works thats what they should give you, however many times it takes.

The rear wheel cylinders are the same for any maestro, so if its for a maestro you should be fine.

Gone back to Rover today with key, they say they willl try and grind it down a bit. But are blaming key not working in ignition on lock wear.
Failing this, I guess I need to get ignition lock off car and take it with key to a locksmith. Haynes says lock is help be sheer bolt that need punched out. How hard is this to do? Someone suggested it might be easier to remove inner steering shaft with lock as a complete unit. Haynes is vauge on this one how. Comments? Advice?
Cheers,
Graham
Appologys for this monty thread being in maestro tech help. My mistake.

Removing the column complete is easier than trying to remove the lock alone in my opinion.
All you need to do is remove the pinch bolt at the end of the column, (the one that secures the universal joint to the steering rack), then unclip all of the electrical connectors, (you'll need to remove the steering cowel to do this - 4 or 6 pozidrive screws). Then undo 4 bolts that secure it to the dashboard and there you have it. As the hayned book of lies would say reassembly is the reverse. Should take about 10-15 minutes, the hardes bit is the access to the botton pinch bolt as it is at the bottom of the footwell.

Thanks ETV,
Just back from Rover, they ground it down still no joy. Time to take it to a locksmith. I've already got the Steering Wheel off and the cowel. So just 4 bolt and the pinch bolt to do. I've a bit of a fear of car mechanics.. I need to get over it! It cannot be that hard.. I take computers to bit and put em back together for a living think I just need to think of car as a big PC.

Yes it is just a giant computer that doesn't break down as often, doesn't throw you out of its windows and if you drop the components there is less chance of them breaking.
I'll not tempt fate by menioning how often they crash either :D

Ok got steering column off. Took it to the locksmith, he is not prepared to touch it. Rambled on about a court case involving a stuck key leading to a accident where locksmith who had made key was sued!.
Took column down to a friendly mechanic who owed me a favour, he punched out the sheer bolt and removed old lock from shaft.
Now I need a lock and key.. I will just accept I need one key for doors and 1 for ignition. I've had worse in past.
Weasel2004 or indeed anyone, any chance you can sort me out with lock and key obviosly I will pay. Mail me. Please.
