How you all doing? I've been driving a Maestro Special for a year now, F reg and it has been a dream. Until two days ago! getting a squeaky sound from the front passenger side on take off and onn accelerating after changing up gears. I am a car idiot, and that's being nice. If anyone has any advice/ideas it would begreatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Firstly welcome to the forums!
Your problem sounds to me like the front n/s wheel bearing needs replacing. The parts should be easily obtainable but fitting I believe can be tough. Someone else will be able to explain this further.
PS: I also own a Maestro Special :hat: Could you tell me what colour it is, the mileage and any other details? :o

She's a nice deep red, with about 38500 on the clock. My wife thinks it's racing red, but that's going too far. MOT is up at the end of the month so I'm hoping that this is all that will need done. And she is affectionately known as Ms Minogue the Maestro.
Thanks for the advice.

Erk, anything like this one perhaps?

The colour is Flame Red (1989) and is a very nice one to have when polished up well. ;)
At 38k yours is only just run in. Seems strange if it needs front bearings replacing...
What sort of sounds/symptoms are you getting from it? I hope it can be sorted before the MoT, and that it passes.

My metro did that for a while, bit of grease and all was fine :)

I just remembered, F170 was making an annoying squeaky noise in 2003. Turned out to be the safety hook rubbing against the gearbox mount. As well as the gearbox being replaced, this problem was solved by prising the hook open a bit so it cleared the mount.

That's the colour. Although mine isn't quite as shiny new looking. As for the miles, over 12k has been done since i got her. It was the typical old man who took it to the shops on a sunday, but I do a lot of driving for my work. There aren't any symptoms as such other than the squeak, it really has run like a dream (touch wood) ever since i got it. I'm just worrying about being able to afford to get it throught the MOT. I really don't want to have to buy another car, it's amazing how attached you get!!

A squeaking from the front could be as simple as a worn alternator belt - depends on the type of squeak. Is it worse when you first start the car? Is it a screetchy kind of squeak and does it vary (or disappear) with changes in revs? If so, it is probably that. If not, ignore me as it is probably something else.

Well, Miss Minogue the Maestro passed her MOT. The ball joint was worn and cost a grand total of £25 but the big expense was the drivers door handle which cost nearly sixty quid!! But she's making a lovely new noise, a bit of a grinding. Ah well, back to the garage again. :(

Good to hear it passed! :p
How did the door handle come to £60? :horror: Also, where is the grinding noise coming from, and when does it happen?

My Maestro automatic has just passed its MOT with an advise that 'play evident in steering rack and both front wheel bearings'. I thought that this seems a bit unlikely with only 36000 on the clock. Any thoughts? As it was owned/driven by an old lady, could this sort of problem be caused by her bumping into kerbs etc? IO don't know that she did, but she obviously clouted something with the front bumper so I guess it's more than possible....

I believe your car has the earlier two piece wheel bearings which to be honest are cr*p and they fail at that sort of milage unfortunatly. They also seem to be susceptible to being stood for some time too (as in they seem to go at very low milages on cars which aren't driven often or have been laid up).
I have to admit though play in the steering rack isn't very likely as mine was still original at 200k when I replaced it with a PAS one. and the older wheel bearings tend to get very noisy before excesive play develops in them.

I've just put a door handle on the drivers door of my monty. I went to Rover and asked a price it was something like £24 + vat for the part. Thankfully someone got me a second hand one. I found it a pain to fit due to very limited access into the door. Bet they recon it took them an hour, (cough!)I therefore can understand why a garage would charge £60.

The door handle came to £60 cos I went to a Rover rip-off merchant sorry I meant garage ;) I decided it was less hassle than hunting about to find one cheaper. The MOT had come in much cheaper than I thought so decided it was worth the ease. Grinding noise is coming from same sort of area as squeaking was before, but this is pretty much constant. Gonna take her back in, just haven't had the chance yet.
