View Full Version : Heritage Centre Get-together organised by The Austin Rover Web Resource

Austin-Rover
14th January 2005, 12:33
The Austin Rover Web Resource (http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/) run by Keith Adams, is planning a social get together at the Motor Heritage Centre, Gaydon on the 13th March. Details are currently being finalised on their Forums

It will be a good opportunity to meet with other Classic Car fans from outside our own Club and possibly to see the variety of cars brought to the event. It’s also a great opportunity to tour the Museum and the many historical exhibits there.

Is anyone interested in going? It’s totally free to get into Gaydon, and work is underway to get all attendees reduced price entry into the Museum.

Let me know if anyone would like to attend and I will pass on the information, likewise I will post up any more details here for you all to see.

It is possible to have the LC10 and last montego out of storage as well if people want. We were going to do it for the christmas party, but the costs were too high. Quite appropriate really as it is the Montego's 'Coming of Age' (there are discussions currently going ahead, on what plans are being made for the Montego throughout this year, further details will be announced in Monstro/Website when confirmed)

If we can get enough people going this time, and if people want to spread the cost it could be organised.

I seem to remember Dan (arranged the booking last time) telling me it was £50 a car to have it out on the day.

Austin-Rover
17th January 2005, 22:46
It's not an event, really - just members of the Austin-Rover.co.uk Forums having a get together. I suggested some people might want to go to meet like minded enthusiasts with different cars and generally view the museum.

Nice to see people are enthusiastic about attending. We as a Club have a very healthy turn out to most occasions, which is excellent!

I'll go. Sounds like good fun.

If people want to see the last montego that will need to be pre-organised as it involves money and needs to be booked. But for those who are't bothered it will be turn up on the day and meet like minded enthusiasts.

I have seen the last Montego before because it used to be on display - where do they keep non-display cars? It is a white diesel saloon.

I have also seen the last Rover 100 and first Maestro but I never got to see the last Maestro that was auctioned in 2003.

They still have the first Rover 75, MGF and RV8 on display on the timeline - but the first Maestro has been replaced by a yellow Cortina :banghead:

c. 164 miles

Dave
27th February 2005, 20:31
erm....

Thats not where Gaydon is. Its just south of Leamington Spa on the M40 (J12?) - Its probably 20miles less than the map you've got there.

Sure, I drew on the line myself because when you save a multimap image it looses the route dots - but the 164 miles is about right.

It's not as close to the junction as your map suggests because the Heritage Centre isn't actually at Gaydon.

Dave
27th February 2005, 23:12
Its about 2 - 2.5miles from the M40 at J12... Im from Leamington Spa so know the area very well.

Gaydon (and the BHMM) is to the West of the M40, Your map shows it way over in the east by the M1 which will be very misleading for people who don't know the area.

Sure, I drew on the line myself because when you save a multimap image it looses the route dots - but the 164 miles is about right.

You can use Alt+PrintScreen to grab the Multimap window in your browser and then use Ctrl+V to paste it - that way it'll keep all the dots!

I might be there, it depends on what my Maestro activities are - things are beginning to pick up now that Spring has arrived.... The LC10 and last Monty would be real incentives however! Any news on those?

If you visit The Austin-Rover Resource Site (http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/events2005f.htm) events page, there is a small snippet about their meet up.

e692wtt
28th February 2005, 13:56
Meeting at 10.30am at the Museum, then a visit to the Cafe and tour of the Museum - paraphrased from the item on the Unofficial Austin Rover resource.

Looks like being a good day, but there hasn't been much interest on the other thread, here (http://www.maestro.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=2594) in getting the LC10 and/or last Montego out of storage for us, so unless lots of people offer to 'chip in' at this late stage then they won't be on show specifically for us (unless they have been put on show in the meantime).

I've changed the map now. Hopefully no-one would use such a small map that shows most of England to try to find the museum.

I lived in Leamington for most of the 1990s, in Tachbrook Street. Is there still a scrapyard in Harbury Lane? I used to get lots of spares there.

Dave
28th February 2005, 22:10
The scrappy in harbury lane is being modernised at the moment, probably only 10 cars in there right now - used good fun climbing over the cars down there!

I lived on Plymouth Place just behind the Church on the parade - not 5 mins from Tachbrook Street.

I've changed the map now. Hopefully no-one would use such a small map that shows most of England to try to find the museum.

I was travelling south in a high speed convoy through South Wales once, radio-marshalling on the RAC Rally of GB, and our little convoy got to the M4. We were heading for digs in Cardiff, but we turned West (we mostly suspected we should have gone East, apart from the guy leading us). Anyway, the chap leading us realised the error of his ways when he found Cardiff on his map - when he swept a biscuit crumb out of the way...

He was using a world atlas! :horror:

3rd March 2005, 20:12
Meeting at 10.30am in the car park (the heritage centre is clearly signposted from Junction 12 on the M40 on brown 'tourist information' signs)... but I wouldn't say this is a strict deadline  aim to get there at 10.30am but if you arrive later then no probs, I am sure there will be people milling about and we will all find each other sooner or later anyway. It will be good to meet some more of you  .

I guess (from the other thread) we aren't fussed about seeing relevant cars (LC10, last Montego) then (unless they are now on show - would be just my luck!!! )? I'm not going to make any arrangements for any 'special' cars for us, that being the case :) .

I may now be able to come! But all depending on whether the Countryman is out of the garage or not. The poor girl has been stuck in the local garage since yesterday waiting for a new CV joint! The ones that they ordered yesterday arrived today and they are wrong! Now they have to order one from Rover and won't have it til tomorrow! If they can't get the bits for tomorrow and get the car done, I'll have no transport! Fingers crossed!

Great fun was had by me!

Jeff's Montego Turbo was really really nice, and Slaphead's Ebay purchase (Maestro VandenPlas) was well worth it, such a lovely car with very rare features to it, like tan leather and a brown Mk2 Dash. Neils Efi was very nice too. Just a shame we didn't get a Maestro Turbo along to finish off the set.

It was nice to meet some of the Austin-Rover lot (altho' I didn't get much chance to speak to them as I would have liked), Quality I didn't see your allegro did you come, apologies if I missed you. Very good drive there and back today in the Rover 75 down the M6. Arrived at 10:15am and from then-on the cars flooded in. After a good nosey around the cars, and a token purchase from Tony's car boot, my dad and I enjoyed mooching around the museum itself...
By which time we came out onto the car park to find it had emptied, as most had made an exit for a local pub!

In no particular order, a few of my photo's from the day:

R40 RVR - 75 2.5 V6 in Copperleaf with Rover SD1 V8 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/F170/Picture042.jpg)

Various noses of cars parked around the back (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/F170/Picture044.jpg)

Nice 'brochure' style photo of a random formation of various models (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/F170/Picture045.jpg)

A pair of very nice Maestro VP's - Targa Red eBay purchase by Slaphead, and Simon Reeve's purchase from yesterday (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/F170/Picture048.jpg)

Another shot of the random formation (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/F170/Picture050.jpg)

Pair of very early (one being the oldest in the club) blue Montego's - 1.3 and 1.6L (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/F170/Picture058.jpg)

A surprise find in the museum - an early Rover 75 in Wedgewood Blue just like my dads in the car park! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/F170/Picture073.jpg)

More images of Museum exhibits will follow.

346 miles for me (first 300 miles gave 40mpg), Monty's now past 142,500 miles. He's done more miles in the last 8 days (trip to Cambridgeshire last weekend, then Gaydon yesterday) than in the preceeding 3 months! :horror:

Yes, it was a superb day, great to meet you all. Steve, A87 is a lovely car, how could you even think of getting rid of her!? Thanks for the box of stuff btw!

Angina clocked round 25,000 miles yesterday, and by the end of the day was on 25270, having started out at about 24950! All that on less than £30 of fuel, not bad at all really. No major issues, apart from the steam that decided to appear from nowhere when we stopped at the motorway services... time for that new water pump methinks ;) She's looking a bit sorry for herself at the moment, I hope to make a few improvements in the near future...

I shall upload some photos shortly...

Roll on the next meet! Hopefully we can persuade more people to join us next time, it really is good fun to be able to meet up, meet new faces and generally have a good time.

I am hoping most people from the club will be attending the Austin Centenary Show this summer, as it really is a once in a lifetime event.

Looks like a good time was had by all. Gutted I couldn't make it but it turns out I was rather unwell yesterday anyway. I wish I could have brought my silver Monty to show off for the first time. I'll be there next time!

 Tony had a bad day... first his legendary parking... then somehow his battery becomes disconnected and the car dies every time he flashes his lights :toothy:

I assume everyone got home o.k?

Well we got flashed by a traffic light camera in London - ON ORANGE! And I don't mean it was just changing to red and I'd cut it too fine - we were stopped at the lights and got flashed as they changed to orange when we pulled away.

I'm assuming I won't be receiving a ticket from this...

You might, they look at the state of the lights. Might count it as jumping the lights.

I know of another traffic light in London, near E+C, that if you go on Green it flashes (Might have fixed it by now, as I only go past it at the odd weekend as it is in the Congestion Zone. So, make sure you don't do a Santa Pad start on that one.

Patrick

That's probably the one - it was near E&C. Anyway, it was definitely on orange, so it's not jumping the lights so I'm hoping I'll be OK

Bit cold but enjoyed the day. Nice to have a Monty line up, also nice to see so many friendly people enjoying getting frozen.

Funny how it's the same wheel he has trouble with!! Pherhaps he should get one of those 1960's bubble cars....the ones with the single wheel on the back!
