hello to everyone, would like to start by saying i think you have a great site here well done.i am new to this so here goes.i lent my monty TD to a freind for the weekend and he came back with it to me with a blown head gasket.he said it didnt get too hot but it was losing a lot of water which was coming out of the exhaust, anyway i set to it,off with the head ,blown between 3 & 4 water jackets, flattend the head and block on with the new gasket and the head, put back all the bits and peices, tried to start it after bleeding her,but what a turning over it took before she fired up.and what a smoke came out of her, any way i took her for a drive,it was slugish with no real power behind it and the turbo would not come in. so now the truth i had no book or timing pins just a dab of paint to mark the timing belt and cogs,as i took the belt off the injector pump moved,it sort of sprung round a bit at least thats what i thought, is it possible for the pump to jump a 180 digrees turn or would it not start if it did......the first start of the day is terrible it turns over for a long time before starting..........can anyone help me with the starting problem and the turbo !!!!!!!thanks for now..george.

You may well have the injector timing one tooth out which makes it slow and difficult to start. I think you'll need to set the timing again from scratch, (I use a couple of drill bits for timing pins)
If the timing is correct then check the glow plugs are wired up correctly and are recieving power. As without them it'll be a pig to start.
The chances are the timing problem is causing the turbo not to come on boost, (or at least seem like that) but if you are still having problems then let us know.

It wouldn't start. There's an A and a B cast into the pump pulley - one is for turbo use - the other for without. Can't remember which is which at the moment, but check your timing anyway.

 If water and oil have mixed when blown this mixture can be fed to the turbo as lubricant and restrict it - my sump/oil system is a mess due to a head gasket failire that was fixed by a total cowboy :rage: that oviusly dident have the intelegence to even use paint marks.

If it isn't down to the timing (I've never owned a diesel) then.......
Silly question but are all the boost hoses tight and in place. ie you don't have a hose off or big boost leak?
Is the wastegate actuator ok? not stuck open?
