You missed the "I'd rather gnaw off my own leg than miss it" option :D

Where's the

"i'd love to come but my parents have inconveniantly booked the family holiday for the 3rd August!"

option?

All i can say is that there had better be a very good write up after the show with plenty of pictures for those of us who can't come....

:(

Naturally I shall be there complete with A82 WHR. Hopefully I will have a chance to get her gleaming as she looked a bit dull and unpolished at MGM. Hope to see many of you there and I think we need to be more vociferous about who we are - I didn't put enough names to faces on Sunday!

Hi!

How can I miss one of the best shows around Europe! But the demand to show the car pictured below is quite high, so I'll bring that one. Besides that it is also nicer to drive then a Maestro - but very, very thirsty...

I've been there 5 times now using my Maxi or 3litre and it is alway worth the journey! I'll probably bring my Maestro one day...

See you!

Alexander

You don't even need to pre-book to display a car because you can pay on entry. Pre booking and obtaining a pass should save you a bit of time and hassle though. If you don't have one you might need to make it clear to the marshals that you're with the club otherwise they'll direct you to the public parking area by default. Pre booking is necessary if camping.

I'm not going this year because I am in the process of moving house. However, if you were to go next year in your black MG1600 with multi-language voice sythnesizer I'd be there with a camera and a dictaphone.

3 litre - nicer to drive than a Maestro? Well I have never driven one so I'll take your word for it on that one. Ever driven an MG Maestro Turbo...

Hi!

I am not too sure if my MG 1600 will be driving me to the UK next year, but it looks quite solid - and the engine seems to run quite good...

Nicer to drive... Hmm, ok I missed out the measure here. An MG Turbo s certainly fun and the MG EFi is a very respectable car for travelling with good fun-factor on country lanes. The 3litre is one of the most relaxing and comfortable long distance cars that I've driven. The seats and place is among the best, even compared with todays top-cars. The suspension and chassis give excellent ride and roadholding for travelling speed of 70-100mph. And except cornering (and braking) capabilities it is still surprisingly close to actual big cars (recently driven a new Merc S320). Downside is the noise, although not much louder then the MG EFi - and lauded for quietness 34 years back - it's not really up to standard. So to resume: The 3litre is certainly outcornerd by a basic Maestro, not much faster then my Maestro 1.3 (if at all), much more thirsty - but no Maestro would ever give this relaxing ride quality to just seat yourself and drive for hours and hours... And, the Maestro does really feel like a cheap toy after driving that massive peace of engineering.

Luxury is not electric windows, electronic gadgets and alloy wheels to me, but space, comfort (of the seat and ride) and solidity - to me at least. So time and/or money permitting I would love to have one 3litre restored to as-new standard and run it as every-day car.

Regards,
Alexander

The 3-litre sounds relaxing and I take my hat off to you for driving such a long way - what dedication. You'll find the MG1600 is not quite as relaxing on a long journey. I travelled 515 miles in mine a couple of weeks ago over a 48 hour period - what impressed me about the Maestro is that it never complained and I got the impression it would go on and on.

If anyone would like to see GG at the BL Rally in Peterbrough, can you tell me how you go about booking, or do you just go along...???

Does this mean that if we turn up in GG with the Maestro & Montego Owners Club Membership Card, we can just pay (what is it, £3?) and go in to show the car? :)

Hi!

The MG 1600 is a bit noisy - I have been told at least. The EFi makes a very nice car for doing quick, long journeys. My father's did many of his 220,000miles by travelling from here to the southern French coast near Beziers (1200kms, usually done in about 10h). Now his Rover 2.0 GTD (Monty) does this job as good, just a lot cheaper.

It is nice, when an older car, and the MG 1600 is one of these, does a long distance without worries. But at least every car build, hmm, after 1965 should be able to do this (if the condition is not to bad). Her some distances our BL cars did without trouble - and touble was rare in more then 30 years:

MG EFI: 2500km in about 24h (Aachen-> southern Spain),
Austin Maxi: 1200km in 15h, longest holiday: about 4500km
Austin 1300: 1000km in about 12h (two chunks a 500km, with 1h between)
Austin 1800: Holiday to UK last year, 2500km
Austin 3litre: up to 700km in a weekend, BL day last year: 1300km :)

and so on. But it is a difference for the driver in which car you sit. The VP Princess 1300 is quite cramped, and you don't want to drive it for more then 300km without a rest. The Austin 1300 is a bit low geared, so that it will rev about 4500 all the time when going about 70mph... And that's where big cars usually are best, and the 3litre is no exception.

I know there are quite a few people, who don't trust their classic car to do longer journeys. But if the car is maintained, then I do not see why. Rust does not prevent them from going - usually ;)

Regards,
Alexander

Your membership won't get you any discounts on entry (£3.00) but you might want to use it and explain you're showing the car. The marshalls at these events usually just direct anything without a pass in the windscreen to the public car park especially if it looks reasonably modern.

lamonto - MG Montego 2.0i

...along with plenty of others on and off the forum I know. Any more? A rough idea of numbers would help us. I'll be going up on Saturday this year to allow for anything that might go wrong on the way!!
