My 1989 Leyland Daf 200 van has a 2ltr naturally aspirated prima diesel engine (v.similar to Maestro) that is now dead. The van was underpowered for towing a car on a trailer (main usage) so I'd like to put the Montego Turbo diesel in. I'm not sure if the extra stuff on the waterpump (timing cover end of the engine) will make the TD engine too long for the engine bay as it was already quite close to the radiator. Can any one advise me please?

What extra stuff? The TD and the NA look the same to me.

What you won't manage is PAS using the existing pump - the bulkhead's in the way. You can fit another bracket up the belt end - though it's got to be quite solid as it'll bend otherwise.

There is nothing more that sticks out from the TD than the diesel, the engines shouls be a straight forward swap if the turbo and exhaust manifolds will fit.

Yes the transplant is easy.
You will need to swap over from you LDV application:
the flywheel, conversion/backplate(new rear crank seal req.),clutch assem.starter motor and put a spigot bearing in the crank (if you want). The sump and oil pick up pipe. Change the waterpump and the plastic timing belt covers (both front and rear).Engine mountings. Match the exhaust from the T/charger elbow/downpipe and swap the fuel feed (from filter to lift pump) pipes.
Iirc all you need to "buy" is a crank seal, spigot bearing, sump gasket and pick up "O" ring and a exhaust flange gasket.
You will be better off replacing the cam belt as well.
It will be no "longer" than the N/A unit.
On the ones i have done, i have both: disconnected (and discarded)the air- oil cooler from the LDV and ran without, or connected the oil cooler up to the Monty/Maestro oil pump.
I have probably forgotten something,( its been a while since i did one!), but if i have someone else will probably add to "the list"
If you get stuck send me a PM.

Thanks very much indeed for the excellent rundown which has convinced me to go ahead with the change. My van is a camper (home conversion of a post office van) hence why it is worth fixing up. The job is way beyond the mechanical stuff I've done in the past so I will probably take you up on the queries offer at some point. Thanks again -John

Hi,
Probably not.
Or at least not without a lot of work.:banghead:
IIRC all the LDV Pilots use the Peugeot (XUD 9) engine. (Some of the very late Sherpa's/200's did too)
This means that the engine mountings, coolant hoses, fuel lines, exhaust, flywheel and clutch (adapter plate) will all probably be different.
Your best bet would probably to find a Peugeot/Citroen TD engine out of a 205/309/306/405- BX/Xantia etc etc and fit that instead.
Thanks

i read your post and i have 1 question to ask as i have fitted a turbo diesel engine in and all went well but stuck on one thing, where did you connect the feed out from the heater matrix (top outlet) as there is no obvious place for it to go, at present which i know is not correct i am running it to the top hose of the radiator, hence the engine running cool. can you help me with this question pls
