This is a little more on the topic of insurance for our maestros and montegos, which has been a topic on the old boards for a long time... but i thought id let you know of my findings regarding being able to "Drive other cars" as well as our own.

I did an online quote with AA, sleected the fact i have "use of other cars," yet, still under the terms and conditions it says, excluded to drive other vehicles! Must be an age matter, as im only 22!

However, a quote from Autodirect gave me a few more options, and showed that if taking a policy with Provident, for approx £650 i would be allowed to "drive other cars!" which would incidently be another maestro, a 1.3 city x which my dad now owns.

My average quote without this option comes to £450 ish. quite a difference in price, and considering i will only need to drive the city x in case my vdp is out of action, definately not worth it. I'll have to wait til im 25, or next year when hopefully the premium will reduce again.

Quite an improvement over the years when i think my first premium was £1200 and that was for the 1.3!

Hope this helps anyone out there looking for quotes. Just beware of thr terms and conditions, sometimes they hide them very skillfully, and you may not get the options you really want!

The clause that says you're not allowed to drive other cars means that particularlar policy doesn't cover you on them. It doesn't mean to say you can't get yourself added to your dad's policy as a second driver on the City. I have my own policy on the MG but am also covered on my mother's policy to drive her Rover 214i.

Incidentally it's incredible how much the premiums can drop after the first year. I paid a massive £1570 for the first year's cover on my EFi, and it'll only cost about £865 to renew... enough of a saving to be able to think about running a second car :D

I have a policy with Autodirect and was suprised to discover that they were able to give me a much cheaper quote over the phone than they did on-line. The chap I spoke to explained that the website assumes certain things, but on the phone they are able to get a lot more details. It is a second-car policy and so is no NCB, this being used on our other car. However, they were able to give 60% discount because of full NCB on the other policy. Made a huge difference obviously.
Because of this I wouldn't bother with on-line quotes, although they might be ok if you have no out-of-the-ordinary situations.
