First job on my newly acquired Maestro and I'm in need of a bit of help! I'm replacing the speedo cable and in accordance with the Haynes manual have withdrawn the cable and pinion unit from the gearbox. But I cannot see how to separate the pinion unit from the old cable. Could somebody explain to me how this is done, or should the new cable have come with a pinion unit already attached (in which case I've been sold the wrong one) ?? I'm anxious not to break anything and would appreciate any tips.
(This is a 1987 1.3 Maestro Mayfair, 5 speed box). Thanks.

You simply pull the gear on the end of the cable off of the original cable and push it onto the new one. Sometimes they can be quite tight but they will slide off eventually.
