I have a 1993 Montego estate. When on normal wipe, the wipers will sometimes stop. If I switch to another speed, usually intermittent, I can get them restarted. But it can be very disconcerting in heavy rain. I have tried replacing the wiper stalk but that makes no difference. I suspect a dry joint. Ideas and suggestions welcome.

Also you could try the wiper control unit or the relay for it as this may be the problem.

Yeah, I've had the same problem on my Montego Estate 1990. Only happens on normal speed but switching to fast speed usually gets it going again. Unfortunately I don't know what is causing it; as it doesn't happen much I'm just putting up with it. Might be worth having a look at the wiper control unit situated behind/above the glove box. Might just need the contacts cleaning up.

Many thanks for these suggestions. I'll give them a try at the weekend.

Further to my earlier post (wipers sometimes didn't work on normal speed but switching to fast got them going); the wipers gave out completely. So I conclude that if they don't work on normal speed it is an indication that within a few months they will stop working altogether.
Thought I'd fit the motor from my earlier montego but the plug arrangement is completely different on the later montegos ('89 on I guess) so it was down the scrappy; charged me £14 which I thought was a bit steep but thats life I guess. Looking at both the earlier and later motors, it looks as though its probably possible to solder up the new connector onto an earlier motor providing you match up the six wires correctly - may need a bit of trial and error as the colours are different but the connections are still in two sets of 3.
