The core plug just in front of the oil dipstick on the engine block is weeping from the centre, I guess its holed.
What is the best way to remove and replace the core plug?
Should I use some hermetite on the replacement. Any help/tips/ advice greatly appreciated.

hi , bash a screwdriver thro the core plug. hook the core plug out with the screwdriver. clean the hole up . put new core plug in using the biggest socket that will fit and tap in with hammer . :) nice and easy if you have the room ;)

Also, put some blue hylomar around the hole before inserting the new plug, helps with sealing.

I've used loctite thread locker on mine, should do the trick.

Job now done at last. Managed to use a centre punch and punch a series of holes in a line down the middle of the core plug. Then a few attempts at hooking it out. Got there in the end, used plenty of hermetite around the core plug and the hole. Managed to bash it in using some steel bar as a drift
A job well done, now onto the leaking heater matrix pipes( another headache)

Where are your heater matrix pipes leaking? Are you getting a wet carpet in the passenger footwell? (Now that's almost certainly a stupid question...) The reason I ask is that we had a problem with the heater matrix pipes which protrude through the bulkhead into the engine compartment just far enough to take a pair of rubber hoses. The leak had sprung at one of the spot welds between one of the pipes and the bracket that holds the two together (approximatly midway between the bulkhead and the matrix, I think). We just bought a pair of replacement pipes from Rover. I'm afraid I can't remember how much they cost.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately they are shot I'll try and upload a picture of the
devastation tomorrow. They have sprung pinholes all the way along the length
of the pipe.

The matrix assembly is comprised of two parts - the radiator bit and the pipes bit also known as a flange. Luckily for you, the flange is the cheap part and can be bought from Rover separately from the matrix itself. If you are a club member, I believe there is one in the parts store - there was one on the recently circulated list, anyway. Have a word with Maria.

Mine started leaking into the footwell where the rubber pipe meets the flange up near the bulkhead but a jubilee clip has staunched the flow for the last two years so I can't be bothered to replace any parts.

My front core plug has just started to leak in my LX normally aspirated diesel. Is it possible to get at it without major dismantling (looks like the radiator needs to come off for a start but not sure if it was possible to fiddle a new one in without taking off the oil filler tube and whatever else) I had thought about Radweld or similar or would that be a waste of time . I did look in the Haynes manual for both the car and the separate book for the engine but that subject seems to have been forgotten
