  • If you could own any car.........

If you could own any car which one would you pick?

I would quite like a Lotus Elise, or a Metro 6r4.

I don't think I could pick just one. There are cars I'd like to have as practical family transport because I have a wife and two young children, and cars that I would like if I had no other commitments.

If I won the lottery, I'd buy a top-of-the-range Zafira for the Missis (it's what she really wants to ferry the kids and their friends about), then it would be SHOWTIME...

I'd buy a heated "showroom" for purely my favourite cars, and I'd spend my time tinkering with them. In it I'd have:

    1 My Maestro Turbo
2 A mint, low-mileage Mk1 MG Metro Turbo, like the red one at MG Saloon Day
    3 A Morris Minor convertible
    4 An MG1600
    5 An Austin 3-litre
    6 A Triumph Herald
    7 An Audi Quattro
    8 A Lancia Delta Integrale
    9 An Austin 1800
10 An Austin Ambassador Vanden Plas
    11 A Rover SD1 3500 Vanden Plas TP
    12 A mk1 VW Golf convertible
    13 A Pug205 convertible
    14 An MG Y-type (don't mind which)
    15 An MGA Twin Cam
    16 A mk1 MGB roadster
    17 A mk1 Austin/Morris Mini Cooper
18 A mk1 MG Montego Turbo (with the DIC)
19 An Austin A35 (my dad's first car: I'd have that for him)
20 A Riley Elf or Woseley Hornet

That would keep me busy for a bit

You'll notice a number of these cars are hard to come by, regardless of how much money you've got (like the mk1 Mini Cooper or SD1 TP). That would be the fun of it: anyone with pots of money could fill a showroom with Bentleys, Porsches and Ferraris; they're easy to come by if you throw enough money around. I'd get most of my fun from collecting cars that are not easy to come by

    I can dream

I'm with John on this one. I couldn't have just one.

      I'd have:

      Hummer
      H2 Hummer
Porsche 911 Turbo in a nice dark blue or black
      Rover 75 (my dads!)
My two Maestros + a Ledbury
A nice little blue Mini with Union Jack roof
...and maybe something from "Pimp My Ride."

Because it's a big sd, and you can do this with it...

Call me odd but I would be made up with a Peugeot 405 STDT estate in black/sorrento green/gunmetal grey/diablo red preferably on an L plate purely and simply because I could have air con and a sunroof, and be in one of the most stylish cars I can think of (at this point you can call me more than odd!), I had my heart captured by the advert back in the late 80's with the 405 saloon driving through the fields on fire to the tune of "Take My Breath Away".....

Not to say that I didn't want a Maestro either, it's just that the 405 is just out of my reach financially, it will cost a fortune to buy, insure, and then fix after it inevitably goes wrong! And I have two Maestros.....

I remember the one with the music in the background (Roy Orbison - I drove all night) where some bloke drives a peugeot off the car transporter (late '80s/early '90s???) and also the one you mention with "Take My Breath Away". Also around 1995/6 I remember "Search for the hero" or summat by M people for the 406 ad. Great way of remembering ancient tunes these old car ads aren't they!

It'd be a metallic blue MG Maestro with the registration D428 CHO, of course

But starting with a clean sheet it'd be one of the following. Note they're all perfectly realistic too, no supercars here or anything even into 5-figure values!

MG Maestro 1600, in black or opaline green, on an 'A' plate
Triumph Herald 13/60 Convertible, one of the last ones 1971
                        Triumph Dolomite 1850
Jaguar XJ6 3.2 Sport, late as possible
Rover 825 Sterling Saloon, White Gold, V reg. Can live with the auto & leather!
Rover 75 2.5 V6 Club SE, original shape, maybe in midnight blue
                        Austin (Wedge) Princess

                        Back to dreaming, for now

6R4 wasnt a Turbo. Will Gollop used to run a twin turbo one in Rallycross thats now in the hands on Ken Simms on the Hillclimb circuit running about 700bhp

If I was being reasonable - the car I've got - a TD Montego 7-seater.

If I was being impractical - a Citroën DS.

The saloon was the most beautiful car ever produced.

The estate wasn't far off being the most ugly. Quite a feat with variants of the same car!
