Ever wondered what a cross between the Montego and the Maestro would look like?
Another update on the 'Unofficial Austin Rover Resource' has pictures of the new 'Estong Lubao CA6410'
Below is just one of the pictures of this new car....

That looks surprisingly tidy - the niceness of the Maestro's rear end coupled with the niceness of the Montego front end! I always think the front end of the Maestro is much uglier than the rear.

I always reckoned the rear 3/4 view of the Maestro was good, better than that on the Montego, but the front of the Montego is better-looking than the Maestro. So this pic is the best of both worlds... looks more 'cohesive' than the Maestro or Montego on their own.
I never fail to be surprised by the updates on the 'Unofficial Austin Rover Resource'.

Karl...LIKES!:D
I always thought they'd look odd somehow...but thats not bad at all!
Rover 25 replacement anyone? ;) ;) Damnit..if ONLY I'd seen this when I crashed mine...
Is the monty front a simple bolt on jobbie to a Maestro then? I seem to remember talk of it not being that difficult..?
I just saw the side profile shot with the MG 2.0i kit...drool...I REALLY like the looks of that! Wish I could import one...I'd have one like a shot if I could. What better new car eh?;)

Is this just something that has been put together in a shed somewhere or is it actually being produced by someone somewhere?

I think this might have been properly produced given its name...
Shouldn't be too hard to knock together a 'Monstro'... :D

The car was launched in China on 11th May this year, so it should have a nice long life ahead of it.

This is all great news, as it now means we have a potential source for doors, tailgates and bodyshells for badly damaged or rotten cars.

They invented Boats and Aeroplanes for this very purpose. If there is no other source, where else would you go? If you went to long enough lengths, anything is possible, i cant see the justification for your sarcastic comment.

Sarcastic comment? Try clearing Customs before the parts even get anywhere near a plane or boat. China is a communist country.

Is it me, or from thius angle, the rear end of the sills look like they curve up, along with the rear door rubbing strips?
Looks kind of like its sagging in the middle, yet the roof looks OK.
Maybe its the picture angle. I wouldn't mind one of those rear spoilers!

The side profile of this new 'Monstro' isnt the best ever. Im not keen on those new sills and the whole look is spoilt by the Montego front wings with a much larger wheel arch than the rear.
That spoiler is good though....

Wonder where they got those VDP door rubbers and inserts from? This is good news if they re-manufacture such items.

I'd say it was scanned from a book or brochure. Agreed re the odd-looking profile, but it looks better from almost every other angle...

I don't mind the large front end - makes the car look like it has a bigger engine!
I have to admit the whole rear end does curve up, and the rear bumper isn't deep enough for a plastic one, this kind should come right down level with the sills!
I see it is the version with the body colour door surrounds, and the rear light clusters are completely different too!
On further inspection of the image, the distance between the front wheel arch and the door is a lot less than the usual, so if anyone brought back a front wing panel (bearing in mind it is the Montego wing), it would simply not fit.
Simon

Have to disagree about the front wing...its Montego all right, you are getting confused because of the pronounced front wheelarch that the Montego had, hence the short front wing rubbing strip. The long bonnet line and short dumpy body has an almost B*W C*mpact recalling theme and is none the worse for that. I also think that the body coloured door frames and B post work very well and are most up-to-date. Wonder what it'd look like with the later Rover Montego front grille and MG Montego Turbo type front air dam? (And a 200PS T16 Turbo up front of course).
As for the body panels..where there's a will, there's a way I'm sure.
Both the Maestro and Montego share the same front end assembly believe it or not, part number ABA 31003!

I remember that..:) Personally I like the side profile, as much as any of the others! I'd love to see the late Grille on one though.
It's basically an MG body..but not as we know it Jim... Now..MG Turbo back bumper, Montego turbo deep front bumper and a decent set of sill skirts...and lower the darn suspension...it could look rather mean..;)
MGF alloys too would just set it off I'd say..:)

Hmmmm, so if I bought Montego front panels (bonnet, wings, bumpers and other bit) could I simply bolt them onto F170 GGT making it a Monstro?
e692wtt
4th July 2003, 14:43
Not sure about the colour scheme...
Front end assembly the same eh? How d'you get THAT in your back pocket? Not like working in a soap works and sneaking a few bars out every day...

And the wipers and a few panels behind headlamps and bumpers... so yes, it should be working. Although the lower edges of the wings on the rear will need to be adapted, since the Montego has a different sill shape.
After having dismantled one Monty and one Maestro I had a similar idea - just the other way round, since I prefer the Maestro front end and would like to see a Maestro TD Estate :-)

Could those Etsong Monstros be imported for sale in Britian?

I think the difficulties you would encounter shipping a new car out of Communist China half way round the globe would make the whole idea seem pretty pointless. No matter how nice it would be to have a brand new 'Monstro' in the UK - i dont think it would ever happen. China is hardly the most 'open' country in the world is it?
:p

Shipping A new car from China would be difficult I agree. But what if a whole batch of'em were imported?... :D

I could 'see' a Maestro Estate, interesting considering the 'squarer' profile as opposed to the Montego Estate...

Interesting concept here.. looks good from the front, but the side view.. not good i feel.
Has anyone ever heard the term.. "cut and shut" ;)
How about a tractor as the front end, a maestro as a back end, and the middle as a scooter?
hehe, i am joking of course.. this idea is great, although it needs some refinements!
if we can import little bits of plastic cr*p, christmas tack, noodles and in fact most electrical items from china, then why not a car? The amount of tacky rubbish we import from Hong Kong and China, Taiwan and all the others is silly, i am sure somehow a car could get here........!!

I forgot to add the bit about the lower part of the front wings, the outer sill is different, hence those horrid side skirts. If you look at the images of the Monstro you will see a red car and a silver car with some writing on it. These appear to have actual Montego bumpers on, and no side skirts. You'd need a Montego windscreen too as these will be different. Who neeeds to import one when you could make one up here?

I've got a spare wheelbarrow if anyone wants it? ;)
No, joking...
I say yes, we should build this car ourselves and not rely on imports from far, far away. It would certainly be a challenge!
How much was this car retailing for in China by the way? Has it been sucessful do you know?
I'll accept £10.50 for the wheelbarrow! ;)

How about importing them in kit form, building them up a'la Ledbury, and seliing them exclusivly to club members?
Then the club magazine would be really accurate!

I like that Idea..I could have 2 kits then..a lotus 7, and a Maestro..:D I'm quite disenchanted with buying a car..I'd rather build one!
It'd be interesting fitting a PC into a Lotus 7 for repair purposes though..
