Hi guys and gals,

I posted a few months ago asking about the possibility of fitting a rover 16v engine in a Maestro and i got a great response. (cheers guys)

Well engine change time is almost apon me, well it's being forced on me, by the water pump leaking (occasionally) and my gf's bad driving. She went a wee bit too fast over a speed bump, came down a bit hard and broke the tie rod mount.

Anyhow, i've decided i don't wanna go down the 16v route or the turbo route. So, has anyone ever fitted a VW 1.8i 8v engine in a Maestie? It fits the gearbox, and should fit in the bay. The bosch k-jetronic injection is a doddle too!

I have driven a Scirocco with this engine in and it was well quick, so a maestro should be pretty good. Opinions guys?

Would you not be better to fit a rover engine. Find a scrap 200 with a good engine and box and swap them across. Much less hassle as it should more or less drop in.

Other wise you are looking at fabricating engine mounts etc. I'm sure it can be done but I just think a rover engine would be a closer fit.

Surely you would have to fabricate an engine mount to fit a rover 16v engine as well? M series or T series. You also have the headache of having to carefully disconnect the efi wiring loom from the donor car and then graft it into the maestro, nahhh, that's serious brainwork! :banghead:

As far as i can see, and i have done some research on this, the VW 1.8 8v will fit the vw gearbox used in the 1.3 maestro, and then you have the option of carb setup or the MFI (k-jet) system. You then have the later option of switching to the 16v head which fits the same block. There are also far more tuning products available for the VW engines than for the Rover range.

Sorry i'm not a Rover purist, it just seems that the VW opens far more possibilities.

Whats the point? An O series Efi chucks out 115bhp and 136lb ft, more than the VW unit. Easily tuned by sticking a T series in, nasp or turbo. If you want a VW engine, buy a Golf

buy a golf???

and scrap the maestie??? :horror:

gees guys, sorry i asked.

Or maybe MGturbo is just a little worried i can make a quicker car than his

If it doesn't work, well i can go Rover at that point, but i gotta have a go, i like being different. ;)

Oh please.... You'll need a turbocharged and NoS'ed VR6 to beat me, get real

I'm trying to save you the hassle thats all, what is the point for very little gain. Time better spent on the bodywork IMO.

Turbo and Nos Vr6? hmmmm, now that's an idea. Or maybe a G60 supercharged lump.

Stop it MGTurban your giving me crazier ideas than i already think of on my own!

Anyhow, i don't need to build a super fast Maestro, I have a capri. There's nothing like 150bhp going through the rear wheels. :p
