Possibly a vacuum leak - run the engine for a while and see if the pressure returns. Although, my car has the opposite problem - sometimes the brake pedal is insanely hard to depress until the engine has been run for a while.

Have you got any brake fluid left in master cylinder? If no then is prob leaked out-rear brake cylinders are favorite but could be leaking anywhere. If yes and the pedal is slack its likely the master cylinder at fault. Try releasing a bleed nipple at front calaiper and see if pressing the pedal forces any fluid out, if master cyl;inder is OK it should come out in a squirt.

Don't be a fool! New master cylinder and servo unit are a snip at Ledders and are already bolted together for your pleasure - I don't know how much he'd want for just that part but it would be well under £50.

Do master cylinder repair kits exist for the maestro/montego. I'd be suprised if they didn't. All it will be is a couple of rubber seals to fit which will probably cure the problem and they usually aren't too dear either, and can be posted easily across the pond.
