View Full Version : Broken Electric Window Mechanism?

After a long period of my drivers-side electric window being stuck in the up position, I dismantled it today and wonder if the elecrics and/or mechanism are broken.

The symptoms are that sometimes, when the window is either right at the top or right at the bottom, it stays there and the motor will not move it in the other direction.

I've checked the electrics and everything is fine there, you can also hear a click from the motor when the switch is operated, even if the mechanism wil not move. I've verified that this is working okay with a multimeter.

Although everything seems in tip-top condition (no corrosion and no visibe wear - the car has only done 25,000 miles) the only way to start the mechanism working again is to hold the switch on and then bash the mechanism with the handle of a screwdriver.

I wonder if it may that the motor 'thinks' that the window has reached its limit of travel and is preventing it from moving further, this might be either confirmed or refuted by the fact that the motor clicks when the switch is operated and then does so again when it's released.

Thanks for any answers you may have :D

I had this very same problem, my window, when up, refused to come down without having to bang the door while holding the switch down.

I eventually found out that the regulator was bent. I'm going to get really technical here. take the regulator out of the door and spin the arm round on it. It should move very freely, make sure that when it gets to the end of it's 'arc' make sure it doesn't stick at all, as mine did. I replaced the regulator with one from the scrap yard. I found these quite hard to find. Maestro ones have a round connector on them whilst the Montego ones, post '89, have square connectors on them.

Hope this helps, be preapred to swear and have your knuckes skinned when putting the regulator back in!!!!

Dean.
