View Full Version : MG Maestro Engine Cut-Out

Earlier today I removed the battery from the MG Maestro as the engine would not start and windows were moving very slowly.

After a good few hours charge the battery was replaced, and windows etc worked fine.

However when attempting to run the engine, it fired up then lost revs and died after about 5 seconds. No amount of revving would keep it alive.

The car has an immobilisor, but I've operated this as normal and it allows the engine to start.

I am unsure as to whether it is the immobilisor or the alternator which is causing the problem. The car has 1/2 tank of fuel so this cannot be the problem. Nothing other than the battery was touched so I doubt it could be anything other than the immobilisor cutting in after 5 seconds (?) or the alternator which could have allowed the battery to drain. The car came up to Manchester from Burton-Upon-Trent yesterday so the battery should have good charge.

Hope someone can help!

Hi, That sounds like the fuel pump relay is faulty, or more likely when you took off the battery you disturbed the wireing around the ecu causing a bad connection.

Cheers Gary :)

Perhaps you should go and switch it off now! That immobiliser will be useless if someone gets in and drives off in it whilst you sat on the computer!!!!!

Hehe as if I would be that silly. :p

The car is behind locked gates, and with the Rover 75 in front so it's pretty safe....

:worried:

I actually forgot to say that GK's advice was to leave the ignition on for enough time to allow the stepper motor to work.

PS: I like the sound of the exhaust.... ;) :D :p :)

That's what I thought. It appears the hot weather we had today must have had some effect on the stepper motor, (I have been told) and so took longer to start... I wasn't going to leave it too long on the ignition before starting in case the immobilisor kicked in...

It's running beautifully now anyway. :)
