I am looking to buy a cheepo CD player which has an ISO connectoion. What sort of adaptor will I need to install it into a 1989 Maestro 1300?
Thanks...

Hmmmm......I take it you have given up on your search for an original Rover radio?

Why not have a Rover 800 stereo as early as possible a model from the scrappers and then get the CD changer to suit? That may cost the same as a new CD player.

Might as well get a new one as I simply cannot find a Philips R570.
I heard maybe Halfords do adaptors for such radios...?

where are you looking for R570s? i see loads, go around a few car boot sales. they were in plenty of cars you should find them easily. ive got three which i have stripped for spare bits to make one good one (try and find the r 670 though its got the autoreverse but looks the same)

I lobbed my original Philip's in the Bin - they might have been ok in 1990 but it didn't exactly provide the quality of sound I need! however, after fitting any sort of CD head unit, you're going to need some tidy speakers, but not necessarily expensive, something like a mid price-range Kenwood would be good or JBL if you're after a nice punchy sound.
Hafords do an adaptor for such head units - I think it has ISO on one end an a bunch of spade/bullet connectors on the other. It may/may not suit. If you're intending to keep GGT for a while then just cut the ISO off and solder the wires - nice 'sound' electrical connection for best performance.
disclaimer - punchy sound depends upon the quality on the speaker's installation! Don't go attaching them to any flappy soft trim like door cards or parcel shelves... they need to be mounted on to metal or wood

Ive got an R570 in my car. I regard myself as a bit of an expert on them now. I like them because they keep the car original and they look smart. the sound quality is fine for me.
There are three major faults with them though:
1. The segments which make up the display can somtimes lose electrical contact with their supply and so you end up with bits of the display not working. i have cured this on mine by applying packing behind the screen to keep it in contact with the power. it seems to be a regular thing for this to happen.
2 The back light bulbs are permenantly soldered to the PCB and presumably when they blow its not a strait forward swap over ( i have 1 of these bulbs blown on each head unit i have, the worst is the one behind the display because once this has gone you cant see the display properly) there are 3 bulbs in total (i think) I wouldnt think it would be too hard to solder a new one in (robbed from another unit).
3 The drive wheels that the rubber band runs on to drive the casette have these daft plastic runners on them ( which have broken on two of my units) when they break it renders the casette deck useless.
Luckily like maestros they are really easy to work on as far as the basic stuff goes and if a major elecronic part breaks (this doesnt seem to be a problem) second hand units are cheap to buy.
I would get one and hope its a good one. then keep buying them when you see them for spares (casette decks, screens, bulbs etc) The ones you buy for spares dont need to have a code so you can get them cheap from scrap yards.
I got another one today for £2.00 with a dodgy screen in it but a good casette deck, ill be needing that a couple of years down the line when my current one packs up.

To replace the backlight bulbs snip the bulb off leaving its original wire leads in place, and solder the new bulb's wire leads to the old ones. The flywheel/pinch roller assembly breaking up on the cassette deck is another well documented old problem. The 570 has one and the 670/681/682 have 2 because of the auto reverse. The R682 was an early RDS set dating from late 1989. The LCD screen can be replaced by carefully pulling it out of its retainer/connector and replacing it with one off a scrap unit. Similar units can be found in Va***alls and late V*lvo 340's The best companion for one of these units is a set of the correct size Torx screwdrivers.

I did have one you could have had from me, that was before it blew up though! :banghead:
Driving along the M40, smelt plastic burning, looked down, noticed sparks coming from back of the unit, pulled out the fuse quickly... and its not worked since! :-( So have had to resort to melodic tapping whilst driving to keep me entertained! :p
