According to the Haynes driver handbook thing, some models had a 12 hour clock and some had a 24 hour clock. Does anyone know when the 24hr variant was introduced/cancelled, and if you can tell which is which by looking? Alternatively, am I being led up the garden path?

I think that you might be being led up the garden path. Both the earlier vacuum flourescent clock DRC 9250 and the later green LCD clock EEP 55 (VIN 345416 on) are 12 hour timepieces. There is no mention of a 12 or 24 hour variant. The later orange clocks (Oct 1988 on, EEP 122) could be 24 hour items. In the Haynes handbook it refers to 12 or 24 hour clock operation. This is because your book was published after the 1989 MY facelift and as a result was updated (somewhat misleadingly) to cover the later model's 24hour capability.
That's how I understand the situation anyway. I've had an 85 Maestro, a pre-facelift 88 Montego and an 89 Maestro - all kept time on a 12 hour basis.

From memory wasn't there an option on the later clocks to swap between 12 and 24hour by holding down one (or more) of the buttons for a set time period.

The orange ones from facelift Montego may have been able to do this, by deprssing both H and M buttons simultaneously. My trafficmaster clock has this feature.

I *think* this only works on later cars with orange clocks and the H & M buttons to the right of the display. You can switch between 12h and 24h by pressing the H & M buttons together. MGT#396 has such clocks and is currently set to 24h (for no particular reason).

Glad I wasn't imagining that then!

So, how do you adjust it? (|Jan 1986 Austin 1.6).

As is mine & mine is a 1990 Montego. The Rover 200 Series from 89ish I think had this mode or at least my 1885 one did.

If you have orange clocks with the H&M buttons on the right of the display, you should be able to switch between 12h & 24h, as I explained above. I don't know when these clocks became standard across the board, but I thought all Montegos had this arrangement by 1990, if not earlier. My Today's Cars brochures from that era shows all Montegos with orange clocks.

Remember you have to press both buttons together. You'll know if it's worked because the display will reset to 0:00 and you'll have to set the time again :)
