View Full Version : Great North Run 2004

I thought it was time to make definite plans for this 'grand day out'...

The Run is happening on Sunday 22nd August 2004, as discussed on a previous thread (see here (http://www.maestro.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=1168&page=1) for details).

I've got a couple of campsites in mind for the Saturday Night (21/8/04), my thinking is if we meet up in the Settle area then we are starting and finishing at the same place which will make directions a lot easier (basically, just off the A65 in North Yorkshire). I am going to visit prospective camp sites either late this week or early next, and will make a final choice then. :)

The main reason I am posting this is to get an indication of
(a) numbers of people interested in attending the Run itself, and
(b) numbers of people who are interested in camping overnight the night before.
I'm hoping for a campsite where we can be 'shoved in a quiet corner' and hope to have a bbq and drinks and a generally damn good time :) .

Then the Sunday will happen as previously discussed. We have a source for hand-held-radios, so we can keep in touch, and the route is dead simple.

It's not too late for further input, if you have any ideas then SHOUT!

Please can you let me know (provisionally) if you hope to attend the Whole Weekend (ok, Saturday late afternoon onwards and the Sunday) or just the Sunday, so I can book pitches at the camp site and for an idea of what numbers will be involved on the Sunday?

Thanks. :)

Saturday 21st August

After chatting to various people, the list of definite Campers seems to be as follows...

Me
Rich Gelder
E_T_V and Skatiechik
Tony and Ann

and anybody else who wants to camp? It'll be a great evening! :)

There are hotels and B&Bs nearby so this is also an option if people want to come to the barbeque we're planning on the saturday night but not spend the night under canvas... and several people have expressed interest in this option too.

Sunday 22nd August

I thought we could meet at a car park in Settle, marked on the map (in pink, at the end of the arrow) at the bottom of this post. It's just off the B6480, tucked between the road and the railway line/viaduct opposite the church. We will be camping elsewhere though - I am visiting the area on wednesday or thursday this week to reccenoitre.

10am would be a good meeting time I think, and we will finish the run at the same car park.

Whether staying overnight or just attending on the day please can people give me an idea so we know what sort of numbers to expect. This isn't a definite commitment, if you express an interest now... :) Thanks.

Any more takers?

List of Campers at the moment seems to be...

Me
Rich Gelder
E_T_V and Skatiechik
Tony and Ann
Metro Mike

I'll be at the BMC/BL Rally at the weekend with maps and to try to encourage more interest.

Oh, slight problem with getting to Settle if you are coming from the southerly direction (eg Manchester)... The A671 in the village of Read is closed, with diversions (I dread to think where  ) which could delay people. But this would be the natural route if you came up the M66 onto the A56, heading for the A59. I'm glad I did that recce the other week ;) .

I also need to make arrangement with the campsite I have in mind...

e692wtt
2nd August 2004, 23:19
Having 'drummed up interest' at the BMC/BL Rally, this is the latest...

definitely:

Me - camping
Rich Gelder - camping
E_T_V and Skatiechik - campervan
Tony and Ann (+ kids) - caravan
Metro Mike - camping
M170 RFA - camping
John from London (non-forum member) - camping, wants from Friday to Sunday or Monday)

and also provisionally:

D428CHO - hotel
Simon (Heap) - hotel
Terry Shelmerdine (non-forum member) - hotel
Dean - I think camping but it's been a long day  (I've sent a PM)

I'll book spaces for 8 tents (so that's 2 spare...), a Maestro camper and a caravan in the next day or two. The site I am considering is this one (http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=3034)

For accomodation, try this (http://www.settle.org.uk/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.accommodation/accommodation.htm) possibly emailing the tourist information centre (near the bottom of the page)...

I hope this whets your appetites ;) ...

In the light of John from London wanting a few days' camping, anyone else fancy the same? I'll be struggling to do this, due to 2 mad cats that will need looking after, but it's an idea for some time out... :) I could be easily tempted though! After a day at work I need another BMC/BL Rally...

Doesn't look like i'll be able to make it :(

I don't finish work till 4pm on the Saturday, i'm off on Sunday but think i'm on an early Monday.

Lack of sleep and driving a bus doesn't mix :nonono:

Plus i'm running out of Lieu days fast.

Not keen on taking the Metro either if i can't cure the VP's hot running.

I'll try to make it to Knebworth.

Cheers

Dean.

I am sure the advert in Monstro gives an over view of the route.

Nothing definite, but I will see if we can haul the Rover 75 along providing it's welcome. :)

Bev and Stew, will add you no problems.

Dean, thanks for letting us know.

Steve, I will list the route tonight (I'm on dinner at work, and my maps are at home). And you will be most welcome in the Rover 75. There'll be a couple of Metros*** there as well, and it's a social event more than anything else :) . Do you want to camp as well, or just meet on the day?

I've got a couple of tents spare if anyone wants to use them, just bring your sleeping bags...

I'll finalise a list of people attending so far tonight, as well as publishing the route.

I'll also make an internet booking at the campsite I want to use as well...

***I think Stew's car is a Rover 100 but it's been a long day and my mind is in low power shutdown

If I am attending I won't be camping over I'm afraid.

The Great North Run 2004

Route:

Meet in Settle (just north of the A65) at Car park on the Left as approach from the South, by the Shell garage (see map on Post #3 near the start of this thread) Grid Reference SD819639 Landranger 1:50 000 Sheet
at 10am to leave by about 10.30am

Leave Settle and head South on B6480

Left onto A65 towards Skipton

Left onto Skipton Bypass (still the A65) where meets A59

Left onto B6265 at next roundabout

the scenery starts here!

Left at Threshfield onto B6160

through Kettlewell (where ‘Calendar Girls’ was filmed)

Left at end of B6160 onto the A684

Left at Hawes (home of Wensleydale Cheese, as eaten by Wallace and Gromit, possible photostop, very pretty place) onto B6255

Left by the Ribbleshead Viaduct (photostop, also an outstanding example of Victorian Engineering, beautiful scenery) onto B6479

Head back to Settle and the starting point

And hopefully get a pub lunch fitted in somewhereas well.

List of Attendees so far...

definitely:

Me - camping
Rich Gelder - camping
E_T_V and Skatiechik - campervan
Tony and Ann (+ kids) - caravan
Metro Mike, Bev and Stew - camping
M170 RFA - camping
John from London (non-forum member) - camping, wants from Friday to Sunday or Monday)

and also provisionally:

D428CHO - hotel
Simon (Heap) - hotel
Terry Shelmerdine (non-forum member) - hotel
Steve Worsley and family – on the day

= 6 tents, 1 camper and 1 caravan.

But I have looked on the website of the campsite I was planning on using (see Post #6 I think), and prices are now £10 per unit (ie 1 tent/caravan/camper + 2 persons + 1 car), with extra per person above this (but no charge for awnings or extra cars)... how do people feel about this? I've got a big 6-berth tent so we could economise on spending and use less space, and the campsite is very convenient for our purposes...

Please let me know by midnight Saturday and I will book on Sunday.

Thanks. :)

PS any queries please send me a PM.

Right, I have booked on the t'internet for the campsite as follows...

8 adults in 4 tents (my 6-berth tent + 3 small tents) parking 6 cars

2 adults (Dan and Linds) in the maestro campervan

1 adult (Tony) + a couple of children in a caravan

I'll let you know when I hear off them, and I also need to speak to John (from London) to confirm when he wants to arrive.

I'm also arranging something about food, but we will only have 'one use' barbeques...

:)

MG Stew

Well it definatly looks like the R100 is going "Up North" now, but dont worry im still taking the video camera so i will try and get lots of in action shots of all the cars :)

e692wtt
10th August 2004, 21:07
Tha would be good, Stew, but I presume you won't be driving with video camera in hand?

Anyway, I've spoken to John (from London), he is coming up on the friday and would like (at least) one of us to be at the campsite as well. Any volunteers to camp over friday as well?

And I've not yet heard off the campsite. I will phone them tomorrow (weds 11/8) night if I don't hear off them.

We'll only have 'one use' barbeques, but there will be gas stoves as well, so a cooked brekkie is assured! :)

Does that mean you'll need my services in the morning again? lol :p

Now, I know you are all expecting me to say something rude in reply to Bev's comment... but I'm not! :p Yes please Bev, but I am sure we will all help out with breakfast this time... :)

Had a bit of bad news actually, the campsite I was planning on using is fully booked on 'our' weekend... :worried: which has had me somewhat concerned... so I have left work early to find us somewhere... after several rejections, I have come up trumps I think...

Holme Farm (http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=3651)

Only thing is, they don't take caravans (I need to talk to you about this Tony, but we all have spare tents and plenty of blankets and a blow-up bed or two for yourself and the kids if you do all camp. We'll sort something out ;) ).

It's also a lot easier to get to as it is on the main road north (B6479) out of Settle, and not at the end of a 2 mile long single track road (thankfully).

Cost

£2 per person (aged 10 or over)
£2 per vehicle
£1 per tent (no matter how many people in it)
£7 for Dan and Linds' Camper

We are more-than-welcome to put a gazebo up as well...

He wouldn't take a deposit but has my phone number as it showed on his phone.

Also he was very interested that there is a Club for the Maestro and Montego, and he also owns the Austin Seven 'top hat' used in the James Herriot TV series "All creatures great and small" in the 70s (that was filmed in the Hawes area, by the way, and we pass through there), and says we can have a look when we are there...

I have booked for a couple of tents for the friday (20th) to accomodate John from London (I must tell him we have changed venue! ), and for 'about 5 tents, 10 people and the Camper' on saturday (21st).

Thank goodness I got this sorted so quickly... I thought we were sunk! :horror:

e692wtt
15th August 2004, 14:07
Are we all clear as to where we are camping? If you look on Get-a-map (http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/) and click the 'I have read... blah blah ...I want to Get-a-map' box on the right hand side of the page, then type in the Grid Reference SD809724 you will get a map of the village we are going to... the campsite seems to be on the left of the main drag as you drive through the village from the south.

I'll be at the site from late afternoon on friday, and John from London will be there too, so if anyone else fancies 2 nights camping as opposed to just the one night, you are welcome.

I've arranged a nearby caravan site for Tony (about 4 miles south, on the same road), and have left a message for John from London to say where we are camping (I told him the other venue that I then found was full, oops..).

I'll print out a route plan for the Run next sunday, and we will have the use of 'PMR' Radios for communication between cars too. :)

And plans are in hand for buying food for the Barbeque (and other meals) too. I will work out costs for the food, and then please can people chip in a few quid each (like at the BMC/BL Rally)? Thanks.

If anyone has any queries, please PM me.

It will be a good weekend. :)

Well done Rich, thanks for saving the day and sorting out another camp site so quickly. You seem to have to plan well in advance to stay anywhere at the moment. It doesn't look like we'll be able to bring the cars into this one though.

Anyone else like me please note that hotel rooms are also going fast, I've just reserved one in Lancaster which is the nearest I can get.

I drove part of the chosen route last week and it looks like we've got some interesting and challenging roads to look forward to :)

That's a shame, but thanks for letting us know.

Ditto for Jeff Turbo, but if anyone wants to turn up 'on the day' they will be more than welcome. I've printed off 25 copies of the route, and I've about 10 spare at the moment (hopefully  ).

Also, Colin Holt from Doncaster rang to say he could meet us for lunch on Sunday, which pub will we be meeting at? *ahem* I'd not thought of that, but will do a brief run round and find one on saturday. I'm of a mind to aim for Threshfield though...

So that's that I guess. I'll meet a couple of you tomorrow night (I'll be there by 5pm latest I hope), the rest of the campers/caravanners Saturday and the rest of the attendees Sunday.

BBC Weather Forecast (http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?id=1173) aint too good for Sunday, but we had a great time last year on the Run despite drizzle and the cold, so I'm not worried about this. :) It might be a bit cool camping though, so don't forget your warm clothes too ;) .

As I say, any problems let me know by PM please... I'm aiming to be out of here by 2pm tomorrow (Friday 20th) so please 'shout' by then.
