Out of interest, has anyone installed the later type of centre console in a Maestro? I picked one of these up the other day thinking it'd be a tidy looking upgrade with space for additional switches (thinking of moving sunroof control to a more convenient location for a start). I'm assuming it's going to be straightforward enough but the mountings are in different places.

Yeah, just get the different mounting plates from a Monty or late Maestro and Bob's your Aunty.....

True! All the mountings can be unscrewed. The rear one on the Maestro console is held in position by the inner rear pair of front seat bolts, torx headed and you need to slide the seats fully forward for access. The front mounting just screws to the floor ahead of the gearlever. The later model console is designed around the later seat belt buckle unit, which uses different front seatbelts from earlier models. Available from Ledbury though, as are the console, gear lever gaitor, handbrake grip and gear lever knob. Quite an involved job just to relocate the sunroof switch (although the latter will just snap into position.

How do I know so much about consoles? At the weekend I fitted the "deluxe" long centre console with rear cigar lighter from the Montego VDP to my Maestro. Looks wonderful!

Thanks, that answers that one then :)

Ledbury was where the console came from actually, I asked for any spare grey interior trim going to replace my car's heavily marked items. I didn't think about the other bits at the time because I was getting carried away!

Wonder what the interiors of the China Monstros are like. Wonder if they're anything like the three (four?) different consoles the Maestro got or whether they're something completely bespoke

Simon,

I'd be interested to know how long the centre console you put in lasts. The new one I put in my Maestro less than a year ago has fallen to pieces already. The screw fixings for the gearstick surround have broke. This was my second new one.

I have a Monty centre console (late) but have retained the Maestro seatbelts. Looks much better, as does the grey gearknob with the lettering painted red, MG stylee..

I know what you mean, I removed my old standard (seemingly mint condition) console, it had never been dismantled. On removing the screws for the gear lever gaitor, all the captive plastic threads cracked and fell apart! All I did with the new one was to fasten up the screws with a thin electrical screwdriver so that they weren't too tight. My new console came from an Auto Monty, so the screw holes had never been used.

I had a similar problem with the Monty console I got for my van. All I did was drill the holes through to the top, and then fit the gaiter with some screws and nuts. At least the screw tops match the ones on the other DIY panels that I have fabricated.
