View Full Version : 2004 MG 'M' Day Pre-Event Camping & BBQ
Austin-Rover
14th June 2004, 23:25
Myself and a few other forum members are planning to have a camp-over on the evening of the 3rd July before the MG 'M' day event. This is a nice opportunity to have a relaxed journey to the event and have a BBQ and a bit of a laugh the night before and arrive at the event on Sunday nice and refreshed.
I have booked a few places at a campsite called Lodge Farm (http://www.lodgefarm.com/campsite/) which is 7 miles or so away from the event. There is a £5 charge to pitch your tent and caravans are also available to hire overnight for a small sum.
Feel free to come down and join us...
:)

Sounds like it's going to be fun. Those who are planning to meet up on the day and drive in convoy, do you perhaps fancy driving by the campsite and picking us up?
A nice leisurely 7 mile drive from there to the event, with loads of other Maestros and Montegos would do nicely. :)

I like the idea of beer/food/tomfoolery but I'm a rubbish camper. As I'm a lounge lizard, I like my home comforts too much. I tried camping once in Banbury in 1988 when I was a lot younger

Pah! A hollow excuse if there ever was one!
C'mon, it probably won't rain and there probably won't be gale-force winds, just like this weekend :)
It'd be great to see you there.

Re. us meeting up and driving in convoy from the campsite to the show ground: how are we going to do this?

I'd suggest that we agree a time and as Gareth has my mobile number now we could just contact each other on the day if things go wrong...?

Aye, great series, Not The Nine o'Clock News, happy days of telly... did you know Rowan Atkinson had to get his HGV Licence so he could drive the lorry in the song "I like Trucking!"?

Just wondering what time we are planning to have the BBQ on Saturday night at the campsite? Shall I suggest 7-7:30pm? Is everyone who is camping okay for directions?
Also I have had an idea for the Saturday Afternoon to make a weekend of it. Seeing as the Coventry Transport Museum (http://www.transport-museum.com) has just been refurbished I thought it would be good to make an afternoon visiting it. Is anyone up for this?
It is apparently free, and houses the largest collection of British Road Transport in the world with over 230 cars and commercial vehicles, 250 cycles and 90 motorcycles.

I have arranged for our party to arrive at the campsite at 5pm. Those of us who are camping can meet beforehand at the Museum and then proceed later to the campsite - or if you do not fancy the Museum, then we can meet up at 5pm.

The camper van won't be back from having a the dodgy bits sorted out, thanks to rear arch panels not arriving on time and the original paint colour being discontinued, so I definitely won't be camping, and don't even know if I'm coming to MGM now :( :banghead:

I hope he weather holds out for you guys on Saturday, and on Sunday, for that matter. The forecast is shoddy. :(
Rain has threatened on one or two occasions in the five years I've been vistiting these shows. The last weeks in June and first weeks in July are nearly always unpredictable - the so-called "Wimbledon Weeks"! I think the clubs organising the event (mainly MGM Group, I think) should look at organising future events maybe a week or two later than currently.

Back to camping for just a sec...
I presume Simon and Matt, you are still joining us on Saturday night? The rest of us will be turning up for roughly 5 o'clock.
Nothing much more has been said about our proposed trip to the museum beforehand so are we still undecided there?
Lets hope there is good weather so we can get our BBQ lit - or else we go hungry!

Yeah, regardless of the weather Matt and I will be there happy camping (in the heterosexual sense, of course).
We've got stuff to do on Saturday morning so won't be there for the museum but will try to arrive at a similar time to you lot, it'll prolly be around 17:30 I'd have thought.
In terms of barbeque, what are your plans? If you are thinking of using disposable ones then I may nip to homebase and buy a cheapie reuseable one that everyone can use. It'll give me an excuse to camp over at Nene park in august as well! £20 buys a fairly respectable one these days.
See you there,

The problem is that if we're in St. Ives we have no idea whether or not it's raining in Coventry so we'll have to go there to find out and once we're there we might as well stay because it's a long way home! Besides I've never been to a rainy Maestro day so it's not going to rain.... :)
On the subject of the barbeque, I'll purchase a proper metal one and some charcoal as I hate disposable barbeques. We can all use this to cook and if you feel like making a small contribution to the cost then that'd be most welcome! If I should fail to acquire one then we can always buy the small Satan's cookers on the day.

The MMOC, MG M Group, Z-register and one of the traders have gazebos so it's almost an indoor event anyway!
www.weather.co.uk has better weather than the BBC website so lets hope they are right. ;)
If the weather is like it has been in Bristol this week it will rin for 5 minutes quite heavily and then be dry for 3 or 4 hours so we might be okay.

Another very enjoyable weekend and a real bonus, as always, to meet a few more like-minded nutters ;)
As mentioned elsewhere it did strike me that overall numbers of Maestros/Montegos might have been slightly down (discounting of course those that had broken and had to be substituted for R800s at the last moment!!). There were quite a few cars I'd not seen before which is encouraging, and car of the show for me had to be Nick's black MG1600.
I've put a few of my pictures from the show itself up on the server, we'll get around to doing a page sometime!

Yes it was a good weekend, and the glowing gazebo only proved necesarry a few times to avoid the slight showers. It was nice to meet the "metro" lot who I hope we can persuade to come to Nene park next month. Perhaps they can even join the northern convoy :D
Aside from a rather interesting journey home due to the M1 being shut I think a good time was had by all even though the stand wasn't as full as perhaps it could have been.
all that remains for me to do is to ask people/someone to do an event writeup for the next club magazine? Do we have any takers?
