The metro is the easiest to sort as the bit that is dead is under the bonnet. It is a couple of coils of wire that are used to drop the voltage to the motor. on the maestro it is under the dash however I've been told that a metro one can be used under the bonnet of a maestro/montego to repair it.

QUOTE]

Fan speed 3 is driven straight off the 12 volt supply - the other speeds are driven through dropper resistors. It's a common problem on many cars - not just BL/Rover and can be either the resistor pack burnt out or the switch burnt. I once made an electronic dropper for an LDV Convoy which kept doing this. Or was it a Transit - I forget.

Anyone interested in how to get your 'slowing' heater motor to work? I spent a lot of time on this recently and managed to fix it. I've experienced this problem on all three Monty's I've had, so I'm assuming it's a common problem?

I had it happen on my maestro, I just pulled the old resistor off and bogded in a new one from another heater.

I didn't have it happen on my montegos tho.

The heater doesnt work at all on any speed 1,2 or 3 only if all vents are shut it gets warm any ideas?? :banghead:

If the fan isn't working the only way air can get in is when the car is in motion (as it draws air in naturally). As the vents only provide cold air if they are open then all the moving air stays cold rather than going through the heater as it is an easier path to follow. However if you close the vents the air is then forced through the heater matrix warming it up.

I hope that makes sense.

I had that problem on a Maestro van,i used to own.It turned out that one of the metal pipes, that pass through the bulkhead to the matrix, was almost completely blocked(I think it was the outlet pipe). This meant that the water was trapped in the matrix and if the blowers were on,it cooled the matrix and pushed cold air through the vents, instead of hot.To cure it,it was a dashboard and matrix 'out' job! Perhaps it might be worth taking off both hoses that attach to the pipes and poke a thick piece of wire into both pipes to try to clear them. It would mean you wouldn't have to take the matrix out.
GOOD LUCK!!

Also note that only cold air comes out of the face vents. Hot air can only be obtained from the window demisters or the foot vents. This sounds like the problem. It is a thing sort of peculiar to maestros and montegos but I've never found it to be a problem.

Im going 2 flush the rad etc tommoz or sat 2 try and unblock it otherwise new heater matrix :banghead:

remove the pipes from where the matrix comes thorugh the bulkhead and then stick a hose directly on the heater matrix outlets. Swap the hose from pipe to pipe occasionally to fluch is in all the directions.

Also I hope you noted that you'll never get hot air out of the face vents as these only ever supply cold air. (its a maestro/montego thing!)

I was going to say that... basically where the two heater hoses meet the bulkhead and go onto pipes through the bulkhead, swap the two hoses over so the original upper pipe becomes the lower pipe and vice versa . This got my Monty's heater working fine after a few days. You might not even need to flush the matrix and system through... ;)

In Diesel Car mag, in the early 90s, there was an item on the generally lamentable standards of ventilation in cars. It was mentioned that the best cars for 'fresh air' were the Maestro and Montego, and someone wrote a letter about forming a campaign called C.R.A.P. (Campaign for Real Air Please) to lobby for better ventilation in cars.

Wrong!! The side and middle vents are for cold air only. The small vents directly above each of the side vents,do blow hot air. So,it sounds as though your heaters are working fine.
