Driving into Derby for an early morning hospital appointment. traffic terrible at the moment with road works on the A38.
However a couple of miles from the DRI suddenly noticed the temperature gauge climbing up. Turned off the Burton Road and parked in a side street. A quick check showed it was the cooling fan sensor which had blown out of the radiator. It was shanks pony then to the hospital. On return I realised that the plastic clip which holds the sensor in place was no longer there. It must have cracked apart and fell away leaving the sensor with no retainer. Luckily I had one in my tool bag and after refitting and filling with water got back home. Down to the Rover dealer and bought a new rubber seal and plastic retainer which cost a silly £6.25 for items which should really be pence only.
Anyway decided having had the car from new it was time to have the radiator overhauled and rang around for a price.
Pleasantly surprised when Coolex of Derby said they would supply one brand new at refurbishment price. This was an origional factory one still boxed and bought it at £51.00. The man pointed out that it was an heavy duty one and to beware of thinner section rads which were commonly sold for Maestro / Montegos and were selling them at this price as there is now obviously little call for them. And to top it off there was the rubber seal and retainer inside the box which I had just paid over 6 quid for.
So if anyone is looking to get their radiator overhauled its worth remembering they can be bought new quite reasonably.
