View Full Version : Diesel Drive Shaft

My '93 2.0 Turbo TD has developed a rumbling noise from the nearside when the engine is under load. The CV joint has been "clacking" for a long time on full lock, but this rumbling is bugging me.
Jacked her up and all the usual bits - shocks, ball joints, swinging arm, wheel bearing are all solid. The O/S shaft is solid but the N/S has a "bit" of play, very slight, is it meant to?
The best price I can get so far is £51 for the N/S shaft. Of course I'll get one off a scrapper having got that price, but I don't want to waste all that time and effort if I'm replacing the wrong bit!
Thanks in advance..............

Mine too has some slight play in the nearside shaft where as the off side one is tight. Mine doesn't seem to knock much (unless I can't hear it because of a very loud/knackered engine!) From the symptoms you describe it does sound like a CV joint though.

Do we have anything suitible in the club spares?

Don't think we have any driveshafts for a 2.0TD :(

Loads and loads for 1.3 and 1.6 VW 'box equipped cars (Hint: please buy some!!)

2 litre TD shafts are the same as 2 litre petrol. A small amount of play is normal.

Thanks everyone.
Can I assume the Montego 2L petrol/diesel driveshaft is the same thing as my Maestro?
Can I also assume that the only way to cure the CV wear, whether buying new or used, is to replace the whole shaft?

"2 litre TD shafts are the same as 2 litre petrol. A small amount of play is normal."

Thanks for the info everyone but a scrapper is about to remove a Monty Diesel driveshaft for me. I know the engines are the same but if the cars are different sizes will this Monty diesel nearside driveshaft fit my Maestro 2.0 Turbo Diesel. I don't know yet if the Monty is a Turbo

The driveshafts are the same, Monty or Maestro, 2litre petrol or diesel. I fitted a petrol driveshaft to my Monty TD ages ago.

Whoops, the rumbling has turned to knocking and it happens even when the car is idling in neutral. Mainly when under load, not when going downhill. Can anyone convince me this is not big ends please please?? It's louder inside the car than under the bonnet.........

I'm not sure if you've done this already but check that the exhaust isn't fouling anything and that the engine mounts haven't broken/worn out/come undone.

Thanks ETV - you must have been driving my car? About the time you sent your post I was in a local garage who said the exhaust must be fouling the crossmember. They jacked up the engine a bit and the noise stopped.
The trouble is I can't drive with the engine jacked up......some may recall my February post desperate for an engine mounting rubber for the O/S. Rover want £35 for this baby, I'm sure it was £20 in Feb?!
The rubber got split in Feb and I've been driving with the two halves squeezed together and my fingers crossed. Guess what the halves are disintegrating and the engine is at least an inch lower than it should be. I'm phoning round the Southeast breakers but if anyone knows anyone who'll mail me a rubber I'd be grateful. Even if anyone knows yards with broken Maestro/Montegos I'll ring the lot...........

I'm breaking a Monty diesel estate - haven't had a chance to look at the mountings yet but assuming they're OK then I can post one. PLs email me, confirming exactly which mount you are after... :)

I've got some 2.0 engine mounts and driveshafts if anyone needs any.
