I bought a VP on a b reg for £150. It was sat under a tree for 2 years, and the owner assured me the engine was ok.. yeah right! the only reason i did not get it going at his place was the fuel pipe was split. The body is solid, and interior is good. Digi dash is fine etc. I am looking for some advise. Am i better off rebuilding this engine or replacing it? top end sounds ok. i think the oil pump is weak, if its run for a few mins, the oil light comes on. Does anyone have a 1.6 s series engine going cheap? Also are the vp's of any value? i put her through an mot, she failed on brakes (pads, shoes needed adjusting and imbalance),exhast blowing, washers and wiper blades. not too bad, i thought. Any suggestions appreciated. She is a B reg.

I am breaking a 1991 s series maestro but its auto engine has only 40k on the clock and runs sweet as, had new waterpump and belts on it less than 100 miles ago

Think you will find the flywheel will be different on the auto, but just means fitting the original from the manual box if its ok.

You need someone with a parts list to check if the crankshaft is the same on the auto as it is on the manual, if not then the auto engine is not going to be that much use to you. Im think that the gearbox adapter plates will swap over from auto to manual.

Often the corrosive nasties found in old engine oil can eat thrugh the white metal bearings found in car engines when they have been left standing for a number of years, so it may have been perfectly OK when parked, but then slowy ruined!

The crankshaft is the same on all variants of S-Series engine: Maestro Montego Rover 200 whether VW manual, Honda Manual or Auto. There are a few differences, most notably the engine backplate. The VP one will do but you will need a "conversion gasket set" Then you would need the VP's manual transmission specific parts such as flywheel, clutch, carb etc. I think the drive shafts are the same too. The added bonus with the engine from the LX is that it will run on unleaded fuel.

Is there any harshness or vibration coming from the engine?

If not, try fitting a new oil pressure switch first..........the diaphragm inside can become weak and cause the light to come on as soon as the oil thins out......

Yes you are correct about the switch, as it leaks too! But the bottom end sounds like it wants to get out of the bonnet. the damage is done:(

Banging its t*ts off!
