View Full Version : Wiper trouble

The missis reports that having used the front windscreen washers this afternoon on our 87 EFi, neither the washers nor the wipers will turn off now unless she moves the lever down to intermittent.

Being temporarily bed/wheelchair bound, I could do with knowing what it's likely to be before she wheels me out there: the relay in the fusebox, the control-unit in the glovebox, or the stalk.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Most likely the stalk John.

This is always my first stop when the wipers play up.

Limited use is'nt kind to the stalks when stored out of doors.

may just be a case of cleaning up the contacts and connections.

My TD Monty used to do the same thing.

Thanks Mal, your diagnosis is correct. Wilma's pushed me out to have a look. It 'thinks' the stalk is being pulled towards the steering-wheel in the wash/wipe position. Medium pressure on the stalk towards the dash restores normality, so for the time being I've bodged a fix by jamming a pencil-eraser between the stalk and its aperture in the steering-cowl.

EDIT: Oh, a bit of surprise (for me anyway): I've discovered that this car has nothing screwed to the top of the glovebox roof! So I wonder where the control unit will be...

check behind the steering column under the dash.
87 efi will most likely have the fuel control ecu under the carpet up in the passenger foot well.
