I am trying to get the front suspension fixed on the MG. It currently clonks under braking and my new buddies at the ex lucus garage are sure it is the top of both struts.

I have tried Rimmers Bros for everything from the strut bearing upwards. The bad news is, very little is still available. The only X parts available are the top mounting rubber and the bearing retainer nut. The bearing is no longer listed, but I have found some at South Wales Propshafts Ltd. However, I am still in need of the 'bearing housing'.

Can anyone help? Please let me know. Otherwise it is still driving great after all my previous run ins.

I would be tempted to take a strut off and see exactly what is up - If you've got some spring compressors etc it's an easy job.

In my personal experience I've never had a top bearing go.

Garage don't think it is the top bearing, but aren't sure until its taken off. once I get the bits i can, I will get the garage to take a look. It is my main car for work, so don't want it off road for too long. I had enough of that with the ignition problem!

I have never had a top mount bearing go... worst usually is they dry out. They come 'complete' as a unit, not seperate bearing and sep housing!

Turn steering and see if any noise.
Could be lower ball joints, have you checked brake pads?

Just stick a jack under one wheel (or usual place on the front sill). Turn the wheel, rock it, spin it, see if you can locate any movement.

My new fav garage did a proper test of the suspension, letting it all hang down as it were, while the car was supported underneath. They are confident it is the struts, don't think it is the bearing either, but something above it. I am just trying to get everything that can go wrong. Once I get the new rubbers and nut from Rimmers I will get the car booked in and we can find out what the real problem is.

Check that the bottom strut bolts are done up extremely tight. I've had them come loose twice on my old van which gave very odd handling indeed.

I hope you don't need top bearings as they are virtually unobtainable. A place in Netherlands has some but wants 45 euros a pair
