I need to get a new screen fitted to a maestro. Can the old windscreen seal be re-used on the new screen? I understand that the seals are only decorative and that the sealant is what actually seals the screen in place. Will the old seal need cut out?

Where will I find a new seal if I need one?

Thanks

It is possible to remove the old seal from the glass and refit it to new glass ('Barney' the beige Maestro wears its old seal with new glass), but depending on the condition of the seal, it may be irrevocably stretched and damaged during the transfer.

But in any case, new seals are often provided with a new screen, so long as you explicitly tell them you will need a seal. When I got RAC Windscreens to replace the old windscreen on my EFi (as recently as 2008), it came with a brand new seal already on it.

Thanks for the reply. I was planning on taking a good screen out of a donor car with the seal.

Is there anywhere I can buy a new seal from separately if it turns out it isnt salvageable? Cheers

Quite possibly RAC Windscreens, seeing that they had no trouble sourcing a new screen (or seal) for me. They even supplied it with a custom blue sun-strip which I specifically requested.

New seals are still available (try Rimmer) and they cost about £50.

You can also use the seal from a Citroen BX which is about £30 and better quality. I have a BX seal on my MG 1600.

If you intend to use the old seal make sure it is clean of all the old rubbish first. Then soak it in warm (NOT HOT) water to make it a little more pliable.
I fitted mine on a nice warm day and in the sun: not in the shade as this keeps the seal flexable until the bond dries.
