View Full Version : Diesel spraying everywhere!
When I picked up my L reg diesel Monty saloon on Saturday, "steve smith" and I noticed that it smelt a bit diesely. Thought nothing of it as it had not run for quite sometime. Today when i was looking under the bonnet with it running, I noticed a fine spray of diesel coming out of a little hole under the seal line of the fuel lift pump. It looks like a hole that was designed to be there but it is supposed to have fuel spurting out of it?? I was reading the manual and it kept talking about a bleed screw. Could it be mine has gone missing allowing fuel to escape? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :banghead:

I had EXACTLY the same problem last summer. If you remove the several bolts around the top of the lift pump you will find a diaphragm inside. It will probably look ok at first inspection but if you remove it and bend it slightly you will probably find that it has perrished allowing fuel to leak through it. I believe the hole in the bottom of the pump is there to allow the air in and out as the diaphragm moves. Being a poor student I went to the scrapyard for a replacement diaphragm and was lucky to find one in good condition which sorted the leak nicely. An easy job to do once you get a replacement part.
Thanks Liam. I will get it changed asap. Glad its nothing too major. Apart from this the engine is so sweet its unreal. Ta

hiya,
I have the same problem with my Montego. I went to the Rover MG Dealer, and they couldn't even find the fuel lift pump on the computer, let alone the diaphragm. Do you still have the part number??
Cheers,
Jon

Fuel lift pumps are available from a good motorfactor. I got mine foir about 25-30 quid. Interestingly there wasn't any listed for a maestro diesel or turbo diesel, but there was one listed for the montego turbo diesel. They are of course the same part and mine works perfectly (although it doesn't have the little knob on the top to press to prime it, you have to press a lever below)

I believe the repair kit for the pump is listed as:
BAU 5570

Hi,
If anyone needs a lift pump i have a new one. Although its not in a genuine box/packaging(it does have Perkins stamped in it!!) it is new. Let me know- it will be less than £20.
Thanks.

Hi Guys,
I have just removed the fuel lift pump form the engine, and attempted to replace the old diaphragm with an incorrect one! The diaphragm in the kit is larger than the one on the pump. The kit was opened before I used it, the woman in parts said it was untouched?!
Does anyone have any idea how this happened?
Cheers,
Jon

No idea. as far as I know all the diesel lift pumps are the same on the maestro, montego and even the sherpa van. Sounds like someone has mixed up the parts

Hi Guys - another problem!!
I have obtained a second repair kit for the fuel lift pump. It is identical to the first, so I will have another go at fittng the diaphragm. Perhaps the original part was superceded by this new one. Anyhow, should be no problem to shoe - horn it in.
However, although I have not yet replaced the diaphragm, there is diesel on top of the engine. I have just taken the car out and jet - washed it, after tightening up the feed pipes and cover bolts ont the lift pump. Diesel instantly appeared on my inspection after driving 3 miles home. I am stumped, since when the engine is running normally with the hood up, even pulling on the throttle cable to raise the revs, I cannot see where this fuel is coming from. The diesel does appear to be originating from the left hand side of the engine. Is there anything else that could cause it apart from the diaphragm. Other guys on here have said that they could see a fine spray from the lift pump, but i can see nothing. Yet there is clearly a bad leak. When I drove to london and back (from brighton), there was a serious drip of diesel in my drive after 5 mins of parking. I dread to think how much fuel I havewasted this way!
Cheers for now,
Jon

If the diaphram is ruptured fuel will be sprayed out of the top of the diesel lift pump (through a small hole in its casting).
Also check the diesel return hoses on the top of the injectors as these can often drip.

Hiya,
thanks for all your help guys. I must be going mad:
1. My fuel lift pump Definietely does not have a hole in the top of it.
2. Diesel is coming in fact pi**ing out from somewhere, but never does it when I stand over the engine. Even if I crank the throttle right back.
3. The replacment kit BAU5570 is the correct kit according to the system at Rover, but the diaphragm supplied is Definitely not correct. It is too big, and does not have the correct 'key' to link in the pump.
4. I have now strippedit down and rebuilt it twice aaarrggghhhhhhh :banghead: I have checked and a clubman that I had some parts off had an identical lift pump.
Help. Help. Help. Help. Help.!!!!!!!.........

I still have that brand new pump if you are interested.
It may be worth checking the screw in unions (inlet & outlet) in the pump, or the associated metal pipes near the lift pump 1st though, in case one has a crack in it.
