KNOCK sensor

guys what does the knock sensor do guys ? i have been lookign through my haynes manual and am just woundering what it does i am looking at replacing mine .

If your engine is knocking i.e pinking this little sensor will here the knock and retard the ignition to stop it pinking, never heard of one going wrong.
