How does one remove the standard roof aerial? Is it attached internally somehow or is it a cover on top? I'd like some advice before butchering my classic Maestro.

Remove the aerial plug from the back of the radio, unclip the cable from any ties right up to where it comes out into the passenger compartment. Then remove the two screws on the aerial itself and pull up carefully. The cable can then be removed from out of the aerial aperture in the roof/pillar. (older style aerials have a removable cover that one has to prise off before gaining access to the screws)...putting it back in is a bit more of a challenge, and if you are replacing it, DO NOT use anything other than a genuine part. Copy parts will let you down and will cause leaks.

Tie a piece of string to the old one so you have something to pull back through the new one with. They are very tricky to feed through if you don't do this.

Mathew is right with the string, but to make it even easier..tie a length of electrical cable to the string, pull it through.
Then ( from the ariel hole in the roof ) remove the outer sheath to expose the three wires
Then wrap the wires round the ariel wire and secuire with tape extending about two inches up the ariel wire.

After trying to get my ariel done for four hours, I was told about this method and it went through first time and took about ten mins to complete.

What makes the procedure doubly entertaining is finding that the roof pillar has been welded, melting the aerial cable to the inside of the pillar :banghead::censored:
