Well, I went down to London yesterday to look that the MG (see previous thread) I was really impressed with it and I bought it. I have spent today messsing with it, and have discovered a few niggly problems.....
1. The rear passanger side door only winds down about 2" before 'something' makes a snapping noise. When I tried to wind it up again, nothing happened - the winder mover around and I could hear a mechanism moving as it should, but the wondow remained stationary. I managed to push the window upwards to close at whilst winding it. Thankfully it has stayed up.
2. The indicator arm isnt working properly. In fairness, I was warned about this before I bought the car. When you indicate and then turn the wheel, the indicator doesnt cancel itself. I have to manually cancel the indicator...(does that make sense??). I thought it was a dodgy incator arm so I swapped it with the one from my 1.3L which works nicely. It still happens!!! Any thoughts?
3. The drivers side wing mirror shakes when the car in going 70mph. It looks like the mirror isnt stuck properly and am not sure what type of glue I can use to fix it (electric & heated mirror)
I would be grateful if you could make any suggestions
Thanks!!!

Hi,
a)Im not sure about the window - best bet is to remove the door lining and have a look.
b)The 'cancel' feature is part of the centre section of the stalks. You need to remove the steering wheel to reveal the centre section - there is one large posidrive screw that releases the whole section - replace with part from scrapyard.
c)I had this - the glue that holds the mirror to the plastic bit that latches to the motor mechanism has come away. I sealed the mirror back into the plastic bit with epoxy resin. Fixed.... however 2 days later a Pug 106 ripped the whole mirror off!
Hope this helps

Where a,b,c = 1,2,3 respectively! ;)

Thanks for the advise Dave. Where you mentioned about the 'centre section' behind the steering wheel - will that be the same type as the one on my 1.3L? If it is, I should be able to just swap em over.

yep - i image so... unless the 1.3L hasnt got intermittant wipe?
If you've got the donor there, it is probably easiest just to remove the whole assembly with the stalks still attached - you just need to pull the 3 connectors of the back of the centre section. (and if fitted, the bulb that feeds the fibre optics in the stalks)

Does the indicator do the same thing in both directions, if not it may be the steering wheel that's misaligned. You can align it by the adjustment on both track rod arms, move them both the same direction the same amount.

The latch is only dependent on the top centre of the steering wheel passing through the vertical - i dont think there would even be enough adjustment in the track rods to prevent this happening!
However, the steering wheel may have been removed in the past - and the lug on the back of it not replaced in the correct manner - there is a white plastic ring with a hole that accepts the lug on the back of the steering wheel... if the lug hasnt been put back into it then then cancel wont work.

The indicator cancel thing doesnt work regardless of the direction. Perhaps it is the plastic lug thing. Im not sure how to remove the steering wheel, so I guess i need to invest in a Haynes manual!!
Thanks again

Take the centre plate out of the steering wheel with a thin edge, take the rubber cover off the nut, remove said nut with swearing aplenty and then vent all anger about it on the back of the wheel until the wheel pops off...
Note: Watch yourself...if it pops off and hits you, it hurts.:banghead:

Be sure to get the steering wheel straight again before you put the nut back on. To do this, drive about with the nut off and keep adjusting the steering wheel position until you are satisfied. I had this to do when I changed to a thinner leather bound wheel from a Montego Estate as my original was horrible and shiny.

Just a quick update on my little probs:...........
1. The window. When I pulled the panel trim off, I found out that the lifting channel on the passengers side rear window is loose. When the window winds down by about 2 inches, the channel completely slides off the window. This is the snapping noise which I can hear. Although I havent fixed it - I guess all i need is some super-glue or a decent adhesive to keep the channel attached to the window.
2. I fixed the cancel indicating thingy. The lug on the steering wheel was not seated in the cut-out bit on the plastic ring. I think the previous owner had taken the steering wheel off and hadnt replaced it properly. Anyway, I took the steering wheel off, lined the cut out section on the plastic ring with the lug and replaced the wheel. Problem solved.
3. I cured the shaky wing mirror with a bit of glue I found in the shed!!!
2 out of 3 problems solved aint bad - LOL :D
Thanks again for for all your help!!!

Be careful about which glue you use, some of them react with the glass and crack the window.
Best of luck
