Hi, today I went to the local brake specialist to get a new master cylinder for my mother's montego 1.6 estate but was told they could only supply them for cars up to 1988. My car is a 1990 model so he said he couldn't help me but I never realised there was a difference.

Was he talking nonsense or do I have to go cap in hand to my rover dealer and get my wallet fleeced?

cheers in advance...

Sounds like BS to me! You couldn't go wrong if you go to Ledbury and get a brand new brake master cylinder attached to a brand new servo unit for, say, £30. That's what I have done (although I have yet to fit it), along with a new GP valve; four new brake hoses; two new drums (complete with hubs and shoes etc); a new handbrake cable and new front calipers and discs (the only part I have actually fitted so far!). Was all at a bargain price so I couldn't resist!

Having got the new m/cylinder and fitted it, I'm not yet convinced there was anything wrong with the old one

So I'm putting the excess pedal travel down to the new pads so if you live near me KEEP OUTA MY WAY for the next week :p

Have you checked the rear cylinders? If these are leaking or a faulty rear adjuster mechanism can both also cause the problems you are experiencing. Also of course air bubbles anywhere in the system also show the same effects.

The rear cylinders are both fine. Checked them when I checked the rear shoes. There is no un-due slack in the hand brake so I assume the auto-adjusters are ok (am I wrong?)

It's all the bloody Haynes manual's fault. It told me to open the bleed nipple to expell the fluid as I pushed the piston back into the caliper (never done this one any car before). I'm sure I didn't need to but as it wasn't my car I thought I'd better do it by the book....

How wrong can you get?

:banghead:

You don't NEED to let brake fluid out (unless the reservoir is full already) but it can help sometimes. Personally I just use the brute force method :D
