HI all,

A quick question - My hazard lights don't seem to work. I push the button at the top of the steering wheel and it doesn't stay down - having never used this before (new to me car!) I don't know but presume it should "click" or something. The fuse for it also is used for other indicators, which are working fine so I don't think that's the problem - the little light bulb inside might be burned out, but again, that can't be the prob. Don't feel like spending loads of cash to get it mended and/or taking apart the steering wheel assembly - any hints?

Thanks

I'm guessing you're talking about a G-Reg 1.3L Maestro?

Sounds like the switch is broken. The switch in my old 1.3L (also a G plate) used to click down when the hazard lights were operative.

If I were you, I'd nip to the nearest scrappy and get yourself a replacement.

It should click down into a lower position when operated, and will flash in time with the hazard lights themselves. Don't worry about taking the steering column cowling off - it couldn't be easier - just be careful when doing the screws back up as the plastic can become brittle with time and the moulded bits that receive the screw can all too easily snap. I have seen a problem with the indicators on a couple of 1.3Ls (and an Astra) be caused by a faulty hazard light switch, so it is obviously a weak-point. As Si R says, nip to a scrapper and get a spare - £5 tops.

I thought the hazard light switch exhibited the somewhat unusual behaviour of latching in a higher position when on. I'm sure that's what it's done on both our Maestros. I'm not really in a position to check just at the moment, but if I remember I'll confirm tomorrow.

I can confirm that, it does latch higher when in use. (So you can see it is on, whilst it's also flashing)

Could there possibly be a broken/detached spring in there somewhere? Or a broken clip which holds it in place?

Just a suggestion. ;)
