Perhaps naming the Maestro was a cruel joke on the part of Austin Rover. Any edge on the Maestro and Montego seems to be prone to rot. There are far more poorly finished edges designed into our cars than any other modern car I know of.
The wheel arches are the worst because the shape of them actually catches must, grit and salt from the road which promotes rust. Many other cars have smooth wheel arches without the lip that turns in or they have platic trim fitted that protects this vulnerable area.
The seams at the bottom of the pillars, tailgate and of course teh doors also suffer. Despite advertising a 6 year anti corrosion warranty, I don't believe Maestros were all waxoyled from new and poor quality steel must play a part.
Austin Rover seemed to make massive improvements with the quality of the paint when the new colours were launched in 1989. Other manufacturers cars of this era are much more prone to fading - but at the end of the day no car has ever failed an MOT or needed extensive welding due to faded paint.
