View Full Version : Number of coils

I am wanting to change the 2" lowered suspension on my Turbo back to standard height. How many coils should there be on standard springs? I have a front set and they are about 7 on the fronts (not measured the rears).

I was thinking this too as i want to raise number 9, its lowered 2' but its just no good round here mudflaps and spoiler catch stuff if i am not careful.
I have number 70 in storage but cant get to it easily, think shes still on all standard parts, will try and have a look at the weekend. I have a diesel with fully standard suspension wonder if the springs on there are compatible?

I was under the impression the diesels rode higher than the MGs. I'm not sure if just the springs are different, or just the shocks are different, or both.
If you want to keep the handling benefits, have you considered keeping the suspension but buying bigger wheels instead, like 16"? Partner them with tyres which are not too much like rubber bands and not only will they raise the car a valuable inch or so but the increased circumference will help the car's real road-speed to catch up with the over-reading speedometer. The deteriment will be to acceleration, but does that really matter unless you regularly drag it?

The roads are appalling these days. I would be happy to get the car back to standard. I have brand new Michelin Energy tires on the car so I want to keep the wheels. I am not a handling aficionado and do not chuck the car into corners ever at all, only interested in its overtaking capabilities really.

Don't count coils, measure 'free' length. These are Monty 1988 on, prob same Maesty?
Turbo & MG EFi
393mm (15.47inches) Front Red/yellow paint code
351mm (13.82inches) Rear White/pink paint code

I counted the coils of both sets of springs :p and found them to be similar to the EFi shell I have parked up for spares so hope to get it done with soon.

I will measure the springs in due course but does this look like a matched pair for standard ride height?

If they have the same paint mark on front and rear and the shocks are the right height ones then they should be fine.

Hi ETV. The shocks should be OK as they were both listed as standard ride height for the turbo. I know the springs should be longer for the front to make up for the weight of the engine but wonder if I might infact have 1" lowering springs at the back and standard at the front! Any more ideas about this welcome.

Apologies, I now have proof of this by comparing pics. :)

Are the springs rover items? If so and they hjaven't been repainted then there should be a splash of paint on them. This tells you what spec they are.
