Anyone got a diagnostic machine. Very poor starting from cold and poor tickover on my Monty Turbo.
I have had the carb refurbished, but I still have the same problem.

Sticking auto choke perhaps?

Don't think so. It seems to work well. The stepper motor rod extends out on starting and reduces when warming up.

Hi, usual suspects would be HT leads, spark plugs, or rotor arm and cap etc.

Did you reset the carb settings after the carb overhaul? poss co too weak, or maybe an air leak somewhere.

Cheers Gary :)

Hi Gary

Reset the gaps etc but not yet the mixture. Not sure how to adjust and check it? New leads, rotor cap etc. I pretty sure its not electrical. But I may be wrong.

Replace the rubber O rings on the auto-choke spindle. The best ones to use are Viton, apparently. Search the forums for endless discussions about the amazing benefits of this five minute job.

Hi Jeff perhaps you could describe exactly what happens when you attemp to start and therafter. It may yield some more ideas from people.

I note you fit new leads already, were they genuine parts? ;)

Rergards Gary :)

If the carb had been refurbished then the mixture will need checking and adjusting. There should be a basic setup in the manual, but after that you either tune by ear, or get access to a CO meter to do it accurately.

Thanks all
The engine just turns over without firing up. After a while she fires up very reluctantly on (I think) three cylinders then clears. If I pump the throttle it floods. Tickover is like popping out the exhaust instead of a purr. The carb was refurbished by Burlen and looks wonderfully brand new and shiny. The car starts first time when warm.

Burlen have a good rep but they use old spec rubber seals, a problem for the stepper motor because they swell with new age petrol. After the mixture and idle speed has been set when hot and your still having problem's, i would look at the seals on the stepper shaft as they are very problematic.

I had the same problem but I bought a car that had done 7 miles from its last MOT (3 years before hand!). To solve it, once it does start and warms to running temp, nail it a few times till it bounces off the limiter (make sure you have good oil, water ect first) it clears it for me and runs so sweet afterwards but I have to do this every time I start it and although it didnt run for 3 years I've had it running for about 2-3 hours every 2 days for about 2 months.

If a car has been sat for ages the petrol goes "off". Try some fresh petrol as that can help in a car that has been sat for ages.
