View Full Version : And so the tidy up begins

Slowly getting round to noting exactly where the rust is on my Montego and now I'm looking for it, it is getting quite scary:rolleyes:

Finally solved my vibration problem, swapped front/rear wheels over, should have done that first I suppose but I never even thought of it, the (old) front tyres must have been knackered as the car had been standing for nearly 12 months before I got it. Seem OK on the back though

Going to start looking at things to make it my own, not Max Power kind of stuff but a good general tidy up and a couple of "tasteful" mods.

Going to phone round the scrappies at weekend and see what is at my disposal but would like an original boot spoiler, nice understated alloys and whats with the brown dashboard?

Two major things that i would like to do are, fill the holes in the bumpers where the taxi plates have been, sort the sound system out as most of the speakers are original and rattle.

I just want to make this a car for the daily commute AND something I can take out with pride like I should be able to, it really is a wonderful motor and with the fuel cost I am overjoyed to drive it.

I think most of my list is cosmetic so I seem to be quite shallow, but what sort of things can I do for it performance wise? it's a 2.0 DLX diesel Turbo and the insurance company for some reason has classified it as grp 13 the same as the 2 litre GTI:eek: Not to happy about that so, this being my first diesel, what sort of things can I do to increase performance? It's good as it is BUT it's no grp 13 car :(

You need to use the special bumper filler which is more flexable than the normal stuff but hardness off as tuff as nails.

The insurance group does not sound at all correct, are you sure they classed it as a diesel and not a petrol turbo.

Cheers for the filler stuff, any particular brand/type you could recommend?

I asked them why group 13, they said it was that way because of the turbo :( I did ask what group the 2 litre petrol was but they refused to tell me unless they gave me a full quote which they wouldn't do with out a reg no.

Ah well, it's the difference between £46 per month and £57 per month and if I didn't use the works insurance scheme it would be at least £800 TPFT, mine is fully comp, anybody can drive my car fully comp, and up until a few months ago I used to be able to drive any other car fully comp but they have changed that so I am only 3rd party on other cars:(

Thanks for the offer but I need it to be a 2 litre turbo, I think thats the magic price hike. I notice you had a GTI for breaking, has that been scrapped? would you happen to remember the re no for that, I would be able to get them to quote on that and tell me the group.

Not sure what good it'll do me though, who can I complain to if the groupings have been setup incorrectly?

It's a pain as my insurance has clear cut divides and prices for those divides.

Group Price per month
1-6 £35
7-11 £46
12-15 £57
16-18 £75
18-20 £86

So as you can see I got the Turbo Diesel safe in the knowledge that it was group 11 but it's not :(

I didn't have a GTi, my SLXi was the same as a GTi except the gearbox ratios were longer.

Well, guess what. That cars a group 16

Think, they are artificially upping there group rating to get more money, mine should be in the next group down and so should this one.

Ah well, still makes for a good deal for me although I'm not sure theres much point in fully comp insurance on mine, it is still cheaper than for me to go elsewhere

Ah well, onto the bits and bobs for it.

Insurance for my Monty TD was 4 pound a month cheaper than the Maestro.... it was in group 12.

I agree with Gareth. You are being taken for a ride. According to a recent Parkers Price Guide, Monty TDs were no higher than Group 12

TheBaldMonk

Well, according to Gareth his was a group 12 which makes it the same price as what I'm paying at group 13.

Like I say, my insurance cost is by group of car alone, group 12-15 cost me the same. BUT if it had of been grp 11 like Parkers says then it would have been cheaper.

It still works out quite well, I get Fully Comp insurance where anybody can drive my car fully comp I can drive any other 3rd party, Full European cover including breakdown all for £684 per year.

Factor in that I'm 24 with 3 years no claims living in Blackley (North Manchester) where it's quite nice up here due to the nice new estate I live on but is still badly known for car breakins, and you will see that it is still a good deal. Just a pity it isn't £11 per month cheaper :(

Oh and the small print on Parkers says that group ratings "may" differ between insurers.

Doh, and I've just re-read what you'd said for some reason I was thinking that Gareth said his was a grp 14 :banghead:

In that case I agree but luckily I don't think now that I am being taken for a ride as two people have now said grp 12 and that is the same price :D Feel a bit better for that.
