All it needs now is a Halfords exhaust trim for that authentic 'Nova' sound, and a stick on sun strip. Sorted.

I can just see owner Zoe's face now. My work gets all over the place doesn't it.

That said, I once did this in Paint Shop Pro out of pure jealousy :D

Steve, at least you could have photoshopped the picture. I'm afraid those dents are all too real. Still it gets me to work and back everyday, and has done things a maestro was never designed to do and still survived.

Some people with very good skills in photoshop here, thats for sure!

Perhaps you should have given George The Indestructible Maestro some new doors in Photoshop?

I don't think your comment about George was particularly fair, Steve. We can't all have perfect cars, much as we'd like to - money and time just don't allow it. If we're going to start sniping at anyone whose car is in less than concours condition we'll find ourselves with a membership of about 10 in pretty short order

After all, some of us are foolish enough to actually take the car out of the garage and use it in day-to-day life. No wonder they don't stay in premium condition!

Steve, just a couple of points of ettiquette. Don't use other peoples photos without permission, (it is after all breaking the copyright rules, please remove it now or I will request that it is removed - and that photo I posted of GGT wasn't taken by you before you say I've done the same :p ) Also if you live in a glass house, don't throw stones. I hardly think slagging of a car whose weekly milage is probably more than both your cars annual milages put together is fair really.

Everyones maestro and montego is as valid to the club as much as everyone elses. Some have interesting history, some are immaculate, some are new, some are old, some have dents, some have holes in, some are fast and some are slow, but I am sure they are equally loved by their owners. The whole point about having a maestro (or monty) is that there are such a wide range of cars (and owners!) out there.

Lets not let this slip into a silly argument - perhaps it would be best left alone. Im sure no offence was intended.

Is that George's original door that's dented or has some cruel fate struck to a newly fitted door? - I con't work out whether or not it's just been over-sprayed to look different.

Btw, I suppose the upside is that you can bolt on a new door whereas you can't my rusty rear arches....

Beaker
31st March 2004, 14:19
Nah its the original door, exactly the same as it arrived to me on my 21st birthday. The door works pefectly well, so at the time it didn't really make sense to change it (I hasten to add I was a poor student then so was struggling to pay for the insurance on the car let along fork out money for a new door). So to stop rust developing, just primed it up and sprayed over it incl. motif. Not the smartest of methods, but that door is the best non-rusty example of them all on the car so must have done something right.

But as part of his restoration project he will be receiving new doors, as we can't have a dented police car can we ;) along with some rear quarter panels hopefully.

Still missing some parts for his restoration, mainly the police parts such as the light bar and possibly a new rear valence, but I guess I wouldn't have a cats chance in hell a finding a new rear valence.

If anyone is interested on what a police maestro looks like, a picture can be found on the Police Enthusiasts Club (http://www.pvec.co.uk/photos_bob.htm) about halfway down the page.

Nice job. I saw on a certain auction site a Drivers' side rear quarter which I was going to bid on for F153 but seeing as it already has an MMOC member bidding on it I shall defer...

The way I see it is that if you received the car with a dent in it then that dent doesn't count, nomatter how big it is!

Good luck finding those police lights - what are the chances?

Police Maestros were very common round here right up until production ceased. They were Blackpool Police's preferred method of transport. But when the goin' got tough, out came their Ultimate Weapon: Rover SD1 3500 Vitesse or, later, 827 Fastback, in Police liveries. Very nice.

Steve: at the risk of making an enemy of you, which I have no interest in doing, I think you are being snobbish and elitist. The condition of F170 GGT is indeed a credit to you, but you and I are in very fortunate circumstances in that we have showroom-condition cars that do minimal mileages. Not everyone has that privilege

G51 NAV is one of the most pristine rust-free examples of the marque you are ever likely to find and with 30k on the clock has one of the lowest mileages, but I don't go around slagging off other Turbos just because they have seen a harder life.

Learn to have a wider acceptance of others.

All I've done to K674XNF is to remove some of the rust patches. I think it looks rather good.

Incidentally, although I have touched up the rear wheelarches, it is only to cover over the slightly strange colour resulting from the fact that we haven't properly repainted them since they were replaced (well, covered over with a new panel  ) the other week :D

My Maestro has a Lancashire registration plate, so on assumption I guess it served in the Lancashire Police Force he may well of served in Blackpool. Would be nice if I could definately find out.

Hard life on cars, this should really be posted under the thread entitled "those little sods" section, but my car is usually left out in Fareham town centre and has been the place of a couple of smashed windows (including the one with the duck), but last week some nice person decided to key H902 from one end to the other on the passenger side. It has been done with such force and relish on the rear wing and rear door, you can see how hard the object has been pressed and slowly dragged along in those sections. I'm not overlly worried about it, theres enough scratches and rusty bits on there as it is, not to mention the bodged job of the sunroof rust which has red oxide primer hand brushed onto it. It just peeves me that someone did it, I have a cunning idea as to who it was, but still have no proof. I nearly got a marker pen and scrawled down the side "do you really think i give a rats :censored: about this" but whats the point?

Upshot of it all, if you use your car every day, it gets dirty, the seats wear it get stones thrown up at it, it gets 5 lads in an escort behind you in the traffic chucking stones through there sunroof and letting them bounce down your roof (yeah it happened on wedensday), but theres little you can do about it all witohut taking the law into your own hands with 5 litres of Leighs paint stripper and a dark quiet night........

Thats one of the great things about our club, so many of the cars are still in daily use, and it shows on the stands at events too, theres a huge turnout that encompasses everything from a mint and boxed example right down to cars that have to work hard for a living and shows itself in dents, cracks and scratches.

Its fair to say that we're all proud of our cars whatever they look like. The car i drive everyday has a few minor dents and scratches (safe to say i didnt cause any of them! ;) ) and i try my hardest to look after it as best as my bank balance and free time will allow. Concidering the cars history, i try to keep it looking its best, but wear and tear from everyday use is inevetable. And on the other hand, my 1984 1.3 really isnt fit to be seen in public...

Rich, the stones through the sunroof gag doesnt sound all to unusual, i find some people cant stand being sat in a queue behind a Maestro, or for that matter, being overtaken by one!

My answer to people tailgating me or following too closely is to jump on the brakes. People who have seen the size of the towbar on our 1.3 will know it'll make mincemeat of any car following too closely.

Why not just pull over and let them past its a far safer option.

Beaker

What would be the most safest option is for people to drive sensibly in the first place and not tailgate.

But lets not digress from this thread too much, I am sure a the 'driving pet hates thread' can be opened up for people to post on what annoys them. Clicky (http://www.maestro.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=605&perpage=40&pagenumber=1)

well i was in the middle lane of 3 lanes of solid traffic coming up lights, couldnt have done anything if i had have wanted to, getting out and saying somthing along the lines of "what the :censored: do you think you are doing" would no doubt have resulted in a black eye. Best thought i had at the time was to shift into reverse and let my foot slip off the clutch!!

Onto tailgating, I am guilty of this, sorry, but when you are on a road with a 50mph limit, and the 85 year old in front is doing 20mph (i'm serious this happened the other day), stops at green traffic lights, and then stops on a roundabout with the only other car on the left, it gets just a little frustrating. Or when there is someone in the middle or right hand lane on a motorway, and there doing about 65, and not overtaking anything, i dont think they realise your there half the time so i am happy to get behind them and give the lights a flash in the move over style. If they were overtaking somthing its different, I would give anyone all the time in the world, not when there just sat there when they should be in the middle/left lane.

MGTURBOM's idea about just letting people past if you are going too slowly seems to make sense here. What happens when youve wreked the person behinds front end? your going to have to pay out from your insurance to repair their car, then depending on the mentality of the driver you might be looking at some kind of damage to your face?

for the record if someone does it to me I calmly take my foot off the power and gently slow down, then as soon as theres chance they go past and I speed up again. two wrongs quite simply dont make a right

A mate of mine actually has car/hatcback front headlamps fitted to his van.
Its one of those things you can't put your finger on straight away when you look at it, (unless your a meastro fan) but if you see 2 (vans) side by side it becomes obvious.
I might actually own this van in the near future! I have been offered it as it needs a couple of jobs to sort it out, but space is at a premium at the minute.!!

If a car runs into the back of another car, they obviously haven't left enough stopping distance in the first place and so the insurance company deem it as being the following cars fault automatically. It is then upto the following car to prove otherwise which in nearly all circumstances they cannot.

I still think myself and MGTURBOM have the best idea of just letting people past if your going slowly, would you be so cocky if they then decided oh well my cars a write of now anyway and decided to hit you from the side or give you a taste of your own medicine and hammer the brakes infront of you? one day you will pick on the wrong person to do it to, I know of a few blokes ive been in a van with who will quite gladly drive into you if you play that trick, with witnesses in the car with them able to back the driver up that it wasnt his fault.

According to the driving manuals if the car behind is too close you should slow down to increase the "time/distance" gap, personally I tend to let them pass in that sort of situation, making a big show of noting the reg and "calling" to the police can work very well.

I was chatting to my barber the last time I visited and we got onto the subject of TV cars - he has a mate who runs an agency and owns a few 1960s vehicles. An ad agency wanted a dark blue Thames van for a drinks ad but his was white so they paid him £800 for a respray and another £800 for a respray back. Instead of getting a proper job he used poster paint and washed it of afterwards - total cost - a few quid.

Couldn't speed camera technology be put to better use catching out tailgaters? It's equally, in fact probably more dangerous and so many inexperienced drivers do it by habit - they're an accident waiting to happen.

The last time I became agitated and reacted with a sharp burst on the accelerator it nearly ended in tradgedy. I just gently slow down now or pull over.

I beleive in europe (germany I think) there are cameras which "get" you if you are following the vehicle infront too closely.. A much better idea than half of the cameras appearing round here
