...can it be done?
If so, how?
It would be really nice to have a car that drives like it should, instead of like the QE2. There's not a problem with 'GGT at all, the steering is surprisingly light. However, 'RVJ has the bigger wheels, fatter tyres, and still no power steering.
I wanted to know if power steering could be added to it. Problem is, it is a deisel car steering/suspension setup, yet it has a 1.3 A series engine.

They never fitted PAS to the 1.3 so anything you do will have to be hybrid, i.e 1.6 rack and pipes, and figure out a way of mounting a pump somewhere secure, then running it off a belt off the water pump pulley. All in all a very time consuming, fiddly job that isn't worth doing. You may find you'll get used to it when you actually start driving it. Also dont forget that tyre pressures make a big difference to the steering, try running 30psi on the front.
The only thing different on a normal 1.3 to your's is the springs and shocks, The rack used should be a 1.3-1.6 one as the VW gearlinkage bolts onto this. Hubs and all other components would be the same.

To change the rack you need a diffrent steering column as the bottom is diffrent, the rack itself, the pump, an extra pulley from the engine, a custom built mounting bracket, all the hoses and pipes etc.
It will rob the engine of a little power as well.
Alternativly you may be able to rig the pump from an MGF to the maestro power rack as this is electric but it is still a lot of work.

Somtimes the make of tyre fitted can make a difference to whether the steering is light or heavy.

Attempting to fit it would be more trouble than it is worth. The steering on the 1.3 isnt really heavy enough to warrant it in my opinion.

MGF PAS is an electric motor and sensor that acts dirrectly on the steering column, as a self contained unit. As other people say, you are best off doing a hybrid pump mounting job. Should be a very nice motor when its done! :)

I looked into this a year or so ago, and I distinctivly remember being told "dont bother its not worth it". After my initial investigation however, the pump will not fit in the early/standard engine setup, the pullys are just to close to the side. I have looked and looked for the part number for the double pully used on cars with power steering which goes on thr crank i think, but cant even find on EPC so gave up in the end. It may not be worth doing, but probably can be done, but on the later engine setup.

I have a new double row pulley for an A Series 1275 engine. It is for an Allegro with swiss emission controls air pump.

Yepp, there have actually been quite a few uses for this double pulley... Like Austin America (emission controls), Swiss Allegros (they did get the Austin America there, too) as said, 1100s and 1300s with aftermarket air-cons. And even Metros (MkI) with air-con...
