Another quick question for all, How bad are the brakes on you Montego? It's a 2.0 diesel turbo with solid discs.

Had them replaced around 600 miles ago and ever since they have behaved strangely.

They were replaced as the old discs were warped. They are nice and quiet for about 10 or so miles (motorway) but the more you use them the noisier they get, they squeal quite loudly when braking but more worrying they squeak whilst driving normally (not braking).
They don't seem very effective, I've stood on the pedal as hard as I can and try as I might, I cannot lock the wheels, the car doesn't have ABS  so not to sure why this could be.

Pedal doesn't feel spongy but I don't know when the fluid was last changed they feel just like they are brand new ie not bedded in.

Could this be two sticking calipers as the sound appears to be coming from both sides, blocked pipe maybe? faulty servo?

Have you tried locking the wheels up when on a loose surface suce as gravel?

It sounds to me as if the calipers are sticking and not coming off the disc properley.

Would this cause bad stopping ability? I suppose it could do because of brake fade?

ah well, not got time to do it tonight, and MOT's at 10:00, I don't expect it to pass but at least I'll have a list of things to fix, hopefully not longer than the one I have :p Just out of interest, I was pulling pipes off to check for vacuum when I replaced the indicator and indicator stalk and noticed than one went to what looked like a fuel filter but had nothing on the other end? what could that have been for, it goes to the black connection set behind the battery on the oppposite site to the servo.

Hi There.

Have you checked the servo is operating effectively? One way to check is with the engine not running pump the brake pedal hard several times, then press hard down and hold the pedal whilst starting the engine. If the pedal moves downwards with the engine running, all is probably well with servo. If not then the problem could be the vacuum pump or the servo check valve or servo etc. :)

Cheers Gary ;)

Right, just gone and done that. Pressed pedal hard 10 times. Held it down and started the engine.

The pdeal moved a fair way down as if there was a bit more travel kept moving down for mayb 1.5-2 seconds so maybe thats the really expensive bit fine then :)

So we are now at poor install of new discs/pads?
Sticking calipers?
Possible collapsed rubber pipes to calipers?
Could the rear brakes have anything to do with it? handbrakes a bit poo.

Will the MOT guy be likely to diagnose the fault or just say, brakes are poor?

There maybe nothing wrong with them I suppose but on my Pug 405 estate they are fantastic in comparison.
:(

Hi, Yes the Mot should give a good indication of the condition of the brakes and what area the fault may lie. If not get the efficiency figures off him and post them on hear, someone will advise.

Cheers Gary :)

I have been having some problems with my brakes, and at the moment all seems ok.Did the squeal shims get replaced with the discs, shoes etc.My problem was a break in the vacuum hose ,check all connections.

Wahey :D It passed.

MOT guy said could see nothing wrong with the brake efficiency although I didn't manage to get the figures. Going to take the wheels off and copper grease the back of the pads and see if that stops it.

It's booked in a Tuesday morn for Rear passenger wheel bearing £40 including fitting :) and they said I have a slight leak where the downpipe joins the other pipe at the bottom.

The cheeky git said there's no justice with MOT's, the car before mine, an N reg Clio, looked spotless failed with out £200 worth of stuff and My "shed" as he put it passed with flying colours.

Ah well, now I know its fine, I'll start tidying it all up, try and get it back to factory... well maybe not but I'll get it looking nice :p

What gets me is this is the cheapest car I have ever bought £230 and it passed first time, even my S Reg Focus didn't when I had that as a company car.
